Arrival of Piako Natives at Cambridge.
Horses at the Front
This clay, 10.20 a.m.
Major Clare and twenty-five Constabulary made their first advance this morning, leaving at eight o'clock, for P^otorangi, to construct a .redoubt, which, it is expected, will be completed in a week. The site- of the redoubt is generally known as the "Island in the Swamp," and is situated about six miles from Cambridge by road, at the junction of all the Maori tracks and roads. It commands a fine position. A message has been received by the Ngatiraukawa from Capt. Gilbert Mair, asking to be allowed to occupy Te Waotu with a native contingent of Arawas.
Twenty of the Constabulary here are to be mounted.
12.10 p.m. A party of natives from the Piako, headed by the Chief Tarapippi, has just arrived in order to meet Mr Mackay, who is expected hourly from Alexandra. Their mission has reference to the Piako and Matamata natives.
McDougall and two of the native contingent have just arrived from Poverty Bay via Napier and Taupo, bringing 40 horses, which will probably be sold here to the Government. They were much wanted. The party were ten days on the journey from Napier, in consequence of their not taking the main road.
1.20 p.m. Mr Mackay has left Alexandra and will reach here about three o'clock. The settlers here are much pleased with the articles in the Star and Herald.
