SERIOUS ACCIDENT IN THE BANK OF NEW ZEALAND.

An accident occurred last night in the Bank of New Zealand to Mr William Greene, one of the bank officials. Mr Greene, who resides near Mount Eden, was working late in the bank with no one else on the premises but Mr Falconer, who left for a short time to procure some medicine from the shop of Mr Hamilton. On returning to the bank Mr Falconer heard moaning, and on proceeding to the spot found Mr Greene lying upon the floor with blood upon his clothes. He immediately ran for Dr Kenderdine, who arrived at nine o'clock, and found that Mr Greene was nearly exhausted from lose of blood, issuing from a gun-shot wound in his breast. Dr J. R. Nicholson also attended, when a minute examination was made, and it was ascertained that the patient was suffering from a bullet wound from a revolver. Mr Greene wasi perfectly sensible, and explained that he took down the revolver to examine it, and when in the: act of. replacing it in the case it suddenly exploded, the bullet entered his, breast, r and he immediately fell. The revolver was kept hanging in the bank for use in the event, of. an .attack, being made upon it. The bullet was extracted from the back of the shoulder at eight o'clock this morning, by the medical gentlemen in attendance. It has not been ascertained, however, whether the ball passed through the chest or glanced under the flesh along the ribs; Ihe patient has been vomiting blood, and -.is in such a weak state this afternoon as leaves very little hope of his recovery. Prior to: the occurrence he was suffering from disease of ,the heart, and was generally in a bad state of health, which will, of course, act unfavourably at the present time.
