DRUNKENNESS
THE drunken brigade, consisting of four rank and file, received the magisterial dispensation. The next culprit dragged forward was Samuel A. Weston, an old rogue. Seven days' imprisonment with hard labour Avas added to the chapter of his history.
AN INNOCENT man wkonuly accused
A respectable looking man named King was placed in the dock with the unenviable sti<mia of larceny of a shirt scored against his name.
Before he was charged Sergt. Pardy said he believed the accused was an honest and respectable man, but the victim of circumstances. Some one had stolen some clothing from a lodger at a boarding-house, and to draw off suspicion from himself had tucked part of the stolen property under the accused's mattress. He (the Sergeant) had great pleasure in withdrawing from the charge. The accused was at once liberated. LUNACY AND ALLEGED LUNACY.
A woman named Clarke was, upon the testimony of Drs. Kenderdine and Stockwell, ordered to be sent to the Provincial Lunatic Asylum. Frank Walker, alias Walter, the individual acquitted yesterday at the Supreme Court of cattle stealing, was charged by a Wairoa settler with being of unsound mind according to the pleadings of his (Walker's) counsel. Adeluua/ico eiiquirendohavirLgheea held by Drs.. Kenderdine and Stockwell, the duly qualified medical practitioners pronounced the alleged lunatic perfectly sane and fit to be at large. He was accordingly set at liberty.
