LOCAL INDUSTRY.
EDGEE'S DTE WOKKS, COxs CREEK. Owing to the increase of business and general inconvenience, more especially the want of water, Mr Edger, the dyer, was a short time ago compelled to seek other premises than those he occupied in Grey street. His dye-vrorks, since the last five months, have been removed to Cox's creek, where he has been steadily erecting buildings and drying-rooms for the more speedy carrying on of his trade as a dyer. There is no lack of dying work, the only difficulty has been to get it finished in as short a time as is agreeable to the wishes of his customers. With this view he has been adding appliances to appliances, and will no doubt shortly be rewarded with the fruits of his labour. The advantages of the premises at Cox's creek for the process of dyeing and scouring are many, the chief of which is the abundance of clean water running through his spacious grounds into the creek below. The facility for drying is also a great benefit. We have often heard folks complain of the difference in the price of dyeing in this and the old country, but when it is remembered that every species of dye has to be imported, and in many instances is 500 per cent, more costly here, it is sufficient to account for any extra cost. One object struck us on our visit to the Richmond Dye Works besides the numberof silk-dressing machines scattered about, and that was the quantity of blankets sent out to be scoured, which are afterwards quickly dried owing to the exposed position of the grounds to the sun and winds. The cost of this process we understand to be considerably below the value of a laundry- woman's soap, leaving labour out of the question. In the dye works different days of the week are selected for using different coloured dyeg. There is no doubt that this is a largely increasing branch of local industry.
