' The wharf has for the past few days presented quite a deserted appearance owing to the scarcity of shipping in port. There are to-day only two barques and two fore-and-aft schooners moored alongside the wharf discharging and taking in cargo. The Saucy Lass, schooner, has cleared for Napier via Mercury Bay with 28,000 feet timber and 15,000 shingles, to be shipped at Mercury Bay, andj sundry cargo from Auckland. I The Martha Ellen, schooner, arrived in harbor this morning from Lyttelton, which port she left on the 18th inst.

The schooner Ruby arrived this morning from Russell with 61 tons coal (slack). The schooner Janet Grey, from Tairoa, brings 175 cases gum, consigned to B. "Walker and Co. Thes.s. Star of the South reported at the Customs this morning from the Thames in ballast.
