LETTER FROM ROPATA.

Wje have much pleasure in giving publicity to the following letter from Major Eopata, forwarded to us by him with a request for its insertion in the Evening Star: —

To the Edifcer of the Jtyismo St.au, Auckland, «. m ,. '■ May 10th, 1872. Sir, —This is to inform you of the reason of my coming here. It was to put an end to the troubles of JSTgati porous who are living in fclieie parts; that nto say, at Mataora and at Kennedy's Bay. Ist. I came to insist upon their giving up their adherence to the Hauhau faction, as that is the cause of the destruction of the people. They have now consented to renounce their evil ways in consequence of my request to them, and they have agreed to be seen by the Government. 2. I also came to settle a land,, dispute between Ngatiporou and Ngatitamateraj which has been peaceably arranged. • 3. The feud between Ngatiporou and Mohi Mangakahia and others about the woman has also terminated peaceably. I have been able to settle these and other troubles satisfactorily. The reason of my taking these matters in hand wag through the wishes of the Government, who are my friends, so that I might put an end to all the troubles of my tribe (Ngatiporou), although this portion of my people were living separate from me. If any dispute arises between Ngatiporou and the Europeans, or Ngatiporou and, any other Maori tribe, I am instructed by the Government to put an end to them. lam always obedient to the will of the Government.
