THE POLICE.

To the Editor of the Evening- Stab. Sib,—Can you through the medium of your wide spreading journal give me any infor* mation concerning the way that the police of Auckland do their duty ? How is it that we never see any of them in Albert street, where they are so often wanted ? It is a shame. Don't we pay our rents and taxes as well as the people of Queen street, and ought we or not to have the benefit of the police as well aa the people of Queen street ? or are the police told off to guard Queen street only ? Here we are night after night ourselves and little ones aroused out of our sleep by the cries and shouts of one and another of the rowdies; some beating there mothers through drink, others fighting, and next there is a lot of boys that collect at the top of the Durham street steps, and what with, their swearing and noise from about seven p.m. to abouteleven there is no rest or peace for the wicked in Albert street. No longer ago than last night there was a woman holding her husband, the father of her children, for their eldest son, a most dutiful and his mother's own boy, to beat a father, the author of his being. I say again Mr. Editor, where are the police, are they all in Queen street ? Inform me if you can, and you will oblige, your &c, a Resident in Albert stbeet.

[The force is exceedingly limited, and is often censured for not doing impossibilities. "We fully admit the evil under which our correspondent and his neighbours labour ; but the advantage that arises from the small available force being stationed in Queen street is that there may be one central place to which persons may come for assistance if necessity arises. — Ed. E. S.]
