THE POWER OF LOVE.

A cuEi6us, t circumstance occurred to-day on the departure of the G-olden Crown. Two men, Europeans, it appears lay claim to the affections of a Maori lady, who accompanied them to the wharf to see them both off to the Thames, feeling " XLOVT "- rr3 Mild .L tit- V^Ul t'other sweet cbnnnpr away." In due time the paddles of the steamer began to move, and as distance began to intervene between tho lovers and the lovely object of their affections, the feelings of one of the men became overpowering, and be " accidentally" fell overboard. We rejoice that we have not been called on to record a melancholy catastrbphe, resulting from the overpowering, influence of the master pasdon, but - a boat luckily came to the rescue and saved the lover from a watery grave. As the accident occurred forward, the escape from the paddle-wheels was very narrow, and at the time the waterman (Mr. Fletcher) picked him up bis life, if not his love, was well nigh quenched. The dripping lover, looking very cold, was restored to the delighted gaze of the sable angel, while his rival, was borne away rapidly to the Thames, doubtless with feelings to be imagined but not described.
