An accident occurred this morning in Queen-street, which, in the language of the penuy-a-liners, might have been attended with serious consequences, but wasn't. A horse was coming out of Mears' stables, having a man astride of him, we mean the horse, not Mears. The horse stumbled on the grating over the sewer and fell, precipitating the man to the ground in a backward direction, who fortunately was not much hurt, having fallen on that portion of him which is softest. •The horse picked himself up ; so did the man, but not so quickly, and from the manner in which he rubbed himself, we believe there must have been some sharp scoria pebeles on the ground at the point' of collision. Lucky it was for him that his centre of gravity was properly placed, for had he fallen on his head, as is usual with most people, the result might have been serious;

We observe that there is a meeting called of those favourable to..the formation of the "Caledonian Investment Company to-night" It is almost a pity that an attempt should be mude to float this company so immediately after the starting of the "Mutual Mining Investment Company." A few weeks' delay could not make much difference, and as the share list of the latter is not yet filled up, we would strongly urge that the projectors of the new afi'air should adjourn operations for a few weeks. There is no connection whatever between the two companies, many of the shareholders of the Mutual Mining- Investment Company having expressed to us their indignation at the name of their company being used to advertise the other.

We would draw the attention of residents at the North Shore.to the .fact that the p.s. Enterprise Wo. 1 will run a late trip to-night in order to enable people- to attend " Polly Plum's" lecture at the City Hall. The Enterprise will leave the wharf, North Shore, at 7, and return from the Queen-street wharf at 11 p.m.
