LATEST SOUTHERN NEWS.

WELLINGTON,

May 81.

A telegram received from Dunedin states that Mr. Vogel's explanation to the Wellington deputation yesterday, received there by telegraph, is generally considered unsatisfactory both by the Press and the public. Here also people are dissatisfied, and a petition to both Houses of the Legislature is in course of signature.

A sytein of telegraphic money orders ha 3 been arranged, and will be brought into operation immediately. The first month of the red iced telegraph tariff shows an incrcasn of 5015 messages over last month under the old tariff, but a decrease in revenue of £345 12s. Gd.

A private letter from Dr. Featheraton states that Sir G. Grey is likely to stand and be elected to Parliament for Newark. He also believes it is finally arranged that Brogden and Co.—great railway contractors —will send a stuff to survey and report upon the Nelson and Cobden Kail way. If so, Mr. Brogden is quite willing to entertain a schema for establishing a system of railways throughout the North. Island, capital being no great object with him. Mi\ leathers ton was going down with Mr. Brogden to North Wales to inspect a railway there with, a two-foot gauge. This, though at present laughed at by engineers, seems likely to be extensively adopted. It is perfectly safe with a speed of 30 miles an hour, and the cost is diminished £1000 a mile for every foot of gauge reduced.
