AKAROA BOWLING CLUB

OPENING OF SEASON The postponed opening of the Akaroa Bowling club was held on Saturday and in spite of doubtful weather there was a good attendance of members and friends. Mr C. Dalbeth, president, declared the season 1939-40 open. He extended a hearty welcome to all players and their friends. He extended a special welcome to all new players and hoped they would have a good season and enjoy the good fellowship always found among the bowling fraternity. He also welcomed representatives flom sister clubs and thanked the ladies for their assistance in providing afternoon tea. He welcomed members of kindred sports present that day and hoped that one and all would nave an etijoyable afternoon. He wished his own club members a happy and successful season and hoped to set some good bowling. The official opening was fte.td for the previous Thursday, but owing to the bad weather it hac'. been postponed and i/hey were not much better off that ■afternoon as far as the weather was concerned. They would have to make the best of a wet green.

Mr W. W. Williams on behalf of the Akaroa Borough Council declared the season open and wished the club every success in 1939-40.

Mrs W. E. Swainsoi: wife of the vice-president threw up the first jack and Mrs C. Dalbeth, the president's wife, played the first bowl. The usual President v Vice-presi-dents match was held resulting in a win for the president by 23 to 12. The scores were as follows :— President Vice-president G. L. Mcintosh W. E. Swainson C. Petterson S. C. Naismith C. Dalbeth J. G. Le Lievre W. Craw (s) 23 W. E. Brown (s) 12 Mr W. E. Brown left the green before the completion of the game and J. Le Lievre acted as skip and F. C. Newton acted as lead.

The competitions resulted as follows :—

Scalliwag-—Miss B. Jacobson. Putting—Miss B. Jacobson. Darts (Ladies) —Mrs R. Bruce (Men) —Mr E. Kotlowski.

In the putting Mesdames R. Bruce, W. A. Newton and Miss B. Jacobson tied, Miss Jacobson winning in the nlav off.

The lady supporters of the club provided a sumptuous afternoon tea.

As a result of a collection for the Red Cross £1 15s 6d was netted for the funds.
