KEENER INTEREST IN FOOTBALL

it is due to a keener interest in football this season the collections at the matches have shown a big increase beyond last year's totals. Dining the whole 1938 season £13 7s 2d was collccted at the various matches. This year the total to date with the season only half way through already amounts to £31 lis 6d. There have been several factors responsible for keener interest in the game this year. The entry of the Eastern Bays team into the senior competition is the main reason as this enables an inter-club match to be played each week. The lapse of a fortnight between games is a bad thing for football. Another factor has been the assistance of Mr S. Hollander to the Akaroa teams. Mr Hollander has set a higher standard and increased the interest in the game at Akaroa. The advent of such an authority on the game in any other part of the Peninsula would have had a similai effect as teams meeting a better style of play are improved unconsciously by their opponents' progress. It is very pleasing to note that the public is giving more generously this year as in the past they have not been willing to pay f or their j sport. If every spectator gave a fair amount for his afternoon's entertainment the Peninsula Rugby Sub-union would find its financial troubles disappear and it is only fair to those controlling the matches to see that they are not hampered by lack of finance.
