LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Akaroa Football Club held their annual dance at the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday evening when there was" a large attendance and an enjoayble evening spent. Mr Fred Fyfe acted as MjC. and' Miss M. Gilbert supplied the music. The hall was tastefully decorated l in the club colours for the occasion. During the evening His Worship the Mayor presented Mr E. Mickle with Mr Quested's medal for obtaining the first field goal of the season and Mr Geo. Odell with the medal presented by Mr W. H. Candy for the most improved player.

On Wednesday night considerable damage was done to the Esplanade fence at Akaroa by irresponsible persons swinging on it and breaking several posts beyond: repair. The damage done to public property is a serious offence and the offenders should certainly be brought to book if possible. About twelve months ago several persons were convicted and fined 1 for a similar offence and ratepayers in the Borough should assist in every way to find out who commits the acts of vandalism.

On Tuesday afternoon Mr Gordon Kearney met with an unpleasant accident in a metal quarry in Gough's Bay. He has taken one of the Akaroa and 1 Wainui Road Board's metal contracts with Mr Haley and had the bad luck to fall down a side of the quarry into some barbed wire and metal. He had! two severe cuts over the left eye and Dr Waddell had to put in several stitches. Fortunately the eye itself was not cut so that he escaped better than nVght have been anticipated.

A local firm who required an assistant for their business, recently advertised for one in a Christchurch. paper. On the first day after the advertisement appeared 57 replies were received and they are still rolling in. This is an: instance of the power of newspaper advertising and shews also the number of men willing to apply for a new job. The motto is, advertise in the newspapers and for your local requirements use your own local newspaper.
