The Akaroa Mail. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1929. NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR AKAROA.
An important step in the progress of the district! the decision of the Education Department to purchase a fine roomy site in' Jolie street, South, Akaroa, and to erect thereon a school for secondary education which should meet the requirements cf the district for many years to come. The importance of secondary education is undoubted, and 1 the district has shown by the attendance maintained at the secondary department of the Akaroa District High School for the past five, or si'x years that it is quite justified in asking for this new building on an appropriate site. The attendance has ranged fromi 30 to 45 pupils. As p;r ties- form an important part of sei-00l life the new site will 'be a wi icome change from the present conditions pertaining at the school, where the children have to use the streets as a playing area in recess. |
'The acceptance of the Akaroa High School Board's assistance in the purchase of the site by the Department is an important fact as it secured for the district the use of that Board's' accumulated funds for forwarding- High 'School education lor the district and these funds will, wa hope, play an important part in the development of the new school.
In designing- the' new school, provision should bo made for a comprehensive farming course. The Rangiora High School has adopted such a course which has proved' invaluable to pupils in tho district and' we certainly think this should be considered when the new building- is being
erected. The site is large enough to provide experimental plots.
In conclusion it is to be hoped that the district will recognise what the Education Department are doing to assist us in obtaining a fully equipped and efficient! secondary school' and will support it to its utmost.
