AKAROA LADIES REST ROOM

GRANT TOt BE EXPENDED ON

FOIOiTIPATHS.

•At . Wednesday's meeting of the Akaroa Borough 'Council Cr. Taylor moved tbe notice of motion that the motion passed on 28 August that the Rest Room be ■ erected on the site next to the! Council Chambers be rescinded. (He thought it would be advisable to hold over the matter and spend th'e £100 already on the Estimates on the' footpaths. They

did not seem' to be able to agree on the matter and next year the 1 Council could probably put another £100 on 'the Estimates and agree upon a site.

| 'Cr Williams seconded the motion. H'e said there! was a great fleal of diversity of opinion on, the subject. It was a great- piity there had been such debates arnd he hoped they would put double the money oit next year's Estimates. The- Rest Room was one 1 of the most pressing necessities in Akaroa. This term would end 'h'isi tin** on the Council and he

considered these who supported the Rest Roomi had been treated very badly. It appeared l that some of the Councillors favoured 1 the Rest Room and then turned tail. .The Mayor had been 1 very keen on the affair when the .Sanders Cup Contest was coming off. He had! turned round l since then and turned them down. He agreed with Cr Taylor that the special committee' appointed to meet the' ladies had found them much in favour of the site on the! Esplanade. I Cr iMase'field said the majority of

the Council were opposed to the site chosen by the iCorr>mittee. As to the enthusiastic meeting with the ladies' it' was all very nice, but they must put the Rest Room where the majority of the Council wanted it put.

•Cr Pool agreed it was best to post pone the matter. He had been muc' in favour of a Rest Room; and if the could not have the si!te on the Es planade had thought it next \best t [have it by the Council 'Chambers. I it was deferred there might be sonn arrangement about the site. Thi rroney for the' .Rest Room: could wel be sp'ent on the footpaths. (Cr Morcom said he believed th< sifte next to the Council: Chamber: was a good one and those iwho woulc not have the Rest Roonii there wen the ones who turned it down. He could not see why there should be so much feeling in the matter. The site round the Esplana'de had been mentioned to the ladies, but he did not know whether the site by the Council 'Cha'mibers had been mentioned to the ladies. Cr Wright sai'di it was a good idea to postpone the matter. He said the Works Committee had been enrv poweredi even to call tenders for the ißest Room' and' were then turned flown. He said' that he held' to the Esplanade site and would stick out again for that site. Cr Lecte said he agreed with the necessity of having the Rest Room, rhey had carri'ed' the site by the Council Chambers l andi he would like ;o seei the work gone on with. The; Mayor saidi he was sorry to >ee the same old division in the C'oun:il. He did not like having to use lis casting vote. It was all very Veil .for iCr Williams to dress him i.own, but he could dress Cr Williams lown. He remembered Cr Williams >eing irt favour of thef Petrol S'tore ite and then turning round. He ;ook a beating as well, as any man ■nd' he abjectedi to the, .tone of Cr. Villi'ams' remarks. 'Cr Williams sai'd he had favoured he Petrol ;St'ore .asi being' better h ; an.nqthfng. Later when there was; o much potest against the site he i ad changed-his mind in favour of a i ettei maintained that he Todrierr appoi'nfed! a co'm^tfee 0 nioci. the. ladies urid . when, they, let the ladies and' brought in a r-e ort they turned it down. The 'Mayor objected to the asserion that the: Council appointed the, pedal committee to meet the 1 dies.

Cr Taylor said he considered it simply a wast© of time to put the Rest Room by the l Council Chambers. There was an unsightly building already on the place and he objected to putting up a Rest Room following the plans he had drawn up. He considered that with the help of the ladies they could, erect a good building. He felt very keenly on the subjcct and considered the Special Committee had' been treated badly as Cr Williams 1 had stated. Cr Taylor's motion to rescind the motion fixing the site for the Rest Room 1 on the section next to the Council Chambers was lost on the Mayor's casting vote, the voting being as follows :— For the motiom (5) Crs Taylor, Williams, Pool, Munro and Wright. Against (5) The .Mayor, Crs Masefield, MoCaughan, L'eete and Moreom. Cr Munro moved' the erection of the Rest Room ibe postponed for six months, seconded by Cr Pool and carried.
