ADVERTISING AKAROA.

DEPUTATION WAITS ON COUNCIL. At Wednesday's l meeting of the Akaroa Borough Council a deputateomisting of Messrs F. Davis, W. H. Candy, W. H. Taylor and W. Jacobson waited on the Council as a. deputation from the Akaroa Advancement Association. Mr Davis said the Association had been somewhat surprised to learnthat there had been some trouble with the Audit Department over the £50 grant towards advertising Akaroa. His . Association had been doirie; a grea|j deal to popularize Akaroa people... had spent a great deal 'more than the outside public knew in advertising the place. The I Akaroa Advancement' Association j wanted to go on pushing Akaroa and if uhey did not get this £50 grant they would be much) hampered. He did not want to see the Advancement Association closed down. It had been suggested that the Association should become incorporated and apply direct for, the grant. He was fairly coi tain that the •'Government would only recognize a local body in the matter of a grant. If there was difficulty with the Auditor he suggested the Association could hand the accounts to the 'Council to pay. He asked the Council's co-operation for the Advancement Association .Some yeais ago the Council had granted £15 to the Association's funds and he now solicited l their aid 1 and assistance in every way. The Mayor said the Auditor had put his objection fn writing and he asked the Clerk to read the letter. The letter from-the Auditor,, Christ church, stipulated (1) that the Council must spend the £50 grant, (2) that the money must not be used for old liabilities.

, M i' w - Jacobson suggested that the /nidito:' Goner;il be asked to validate the action of tho Council in accepting tne .grant and paying it- over to (he Association's advertising campaign, with the sum. He quoted another instance in whi'ch the Auditor General when- applied to validated an irregularity. 'He also stressed the need of Akaroa to advertise to be in- line with • other tourist resorts.

'•Mr W. 11. ICandy said that according the letter from the Audit Department there was nothing to prevent the Council from taking the grant and settling- the amounts handed to them by the Advancement Association. Mr W. TI. Taylor said he had little to add to what the others had said. He thought it a pity to lose the £50 grant. The 'Mayor said the Advancement Association wanted the Council to get the grant and they would spend the money. It would save a lot of trouble if the Council spent the money. He referred to the objections of the Audit Department to other matters in the past. Cr Willi'anis suggested l the Coun|Cil and the Advancement AssocPa- | tion could spend the ir>oncy conIjointly. I Ci Maseficld asked if the Advancement Association had' ever made an application for the grant. Mr F. Davis said grants always came through local bodies and ex-1 plained l that (he Association' had to' '»•> ' < > i' advertising Akaroa and' I lie (government then granted an- '• oilier !;50. He had not heard' of any

trou/ble with the Audit Department ' before except in the matter of cei- * tai'n expenditure at the Jubilee. Cr McCaiiffhan asked if the Association had any idea of settlingold' liabilities with this sum. 'Mr F. Davis said that they could use the £50 only for future expenditure a net had no idea of settling longstanding" debts. He added that there appeared to be an idea t the Association was heavily in debt. They had a small' debt of £12 anc j had' all the business people behind; them. He did not know where the j idea cam? from and why the Council discussed the Associations fmaiv ci-al position as it did not affect the g-i'ant. , , ! Cr Taylor said! he had brought up the matter of the. Association's position as he was 1 the Associations auditor. Ho asked what was the , Association's income.

11 T're deputation stated that busi- - ness people gave subscriptions and maintained this was not the matter . for discussion. Cr Taylor said the Council could give no monetary support. He said' the Association had done good work. The clerk said the Auditor had impressed upon him the advisability of the Council keeping- out of the thing and' advised the Association to become incorporated. | Tha 'Mayor said that the Council ; did not want, to see the Association • ! °se the grant: there was a legal way out of the difficulty they would take it. Mr F. Davis retiring after thanking the Council and said the Association wouldi make application themselves. If they received an unfavourable reply they woukl come to the | Council again. j The deputation thdn withdrew.
