TO PENINSULA SHIPPERS, Dear Sire, —With reference to the circular issued by Messrs Pitcaithly and Co., dated 23rd February in regard to the Biuke Penin sula, Cheviot and Kaikoura trade, and in which they quote somewhat extensively from a letter addressed lo them by us on 17th February, and it is only riyhL that we should give somtwhal fuller di-taile of the negotiations therein referred to, the more so us these were initialed by Messrs Pitoaithly and Co.—and not. by us— na thoir circular letter would leid one lo 6uppo c. Mr Pilc»ithly called on ua eiuly in January and suggested that some arrangement should te come to, and we replied that we did not think this possible, bub that we would consider any proposition which he might lay before v?. We i. formed him that our arrangements wit'i the Anchor Co. practioally debarred us from withdrawing from any portion of the trade without) their approval, and that we were morally bound to do nothing which would injuriously affect the interests of the settlers in the Peninsula and on the Kaikoura-Cheviot coast who had given us their support. On 11th January, Mr Pitcaithly wrote to up, placing his proposals before up, which, in effect, were that he was prepared to go out of the Lytteltou Cheviot Kaikoura trade provided we would retire from the Banks Peninsula trade, and suggested that each should assist the other when occasion offered Wβ were unable lo reply definitely to this letter till 17th February, as we had to discuss it with the othere who were inter , ested in the trade, and we then wrote that only two coiuses appeared open to us — Fir.t—To continue matters as at pret* ent; or Second —To buy Mr Pilcaithly'a steam, ere, and tike over the entire trade And wo etated that of these we preferred the first. The circular to which we are referring Implies that if the trade was loft entirely in our hands, the settlers would be penalised by higher r&tes being in posed, but we think we can claim to have conducted the service between Wellington and Lyttelton for the past twenty ye*r<» at lower rates than rule on any oth> r part of the New Zealand coast, and we may add that we purpote continuing the same Hoe ol action whatever the result of Messrs Pitciithly and Co.'s opposition may be. We are about to undertake extensive rrpairs both to the Wukatu and Kern e.ly, to that these steamers may be able to carry on the trade in an efficient manner, and ne hope we may rely on the support of the Kai koura imd Cheviot settlers, who must have been giea'ly ass s;ed by the service which we have conducted for so many years, vvhiU we trust the Peninauh tettlere may aUo see their way to continue the generous support which they have extended since we have been running in their district. Youre faithfully, LEVIN & Co,, L?d.
