THE CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALES.

The first wool sale of the season was held in the Canterbury Hall on Thursday, in the presence of a large and representative attendance of buyers, the number being larger than has been the case for some years a. an op-ning sale. The catajbgue consisted of .676 bales, and the bulk Jlf the wool came forward in fair conditio)}. The sale opened well but as it proa.eded bidding was somewhat irregular, though the sale, generally rpeaking, was satisfactory. The prices real ised, though marking a distinct advance on those ruling at the corresponding Bale last season, were in some quarters considered disappointing; bat the recent reports of a weakening of tho English market, and the fact that the London sales do not commence until next week, probably influenced the operations of foreign buyers. Half bred and merino wools were not so plentiful as usual, and excited keen competition amongst factory buyers. The top price for merinoes was lOd per lb, realised for Messrs A, and D. Macfarlane's Lyniou brand. The range of prices was as follow:— Greasy merino, superior lOd per lb, medium to good B|d to 9d per lb, inferior 7d to 8d per lb ; greasy half bred, superior Bsrt to 9|d per lb ; medium 7|d to B£d per lb inferior 6£d to per lb ; greasy crossbred, superior 7d to"8J per lb, medium 6£d to 7£d per Ib. inferior s£d to 6£d per lb ; greasy longwool, superior 6f d to 7£d per Ib, inferior s£d to 6£d per lb; greasy pieces and bellies, good 5d to per lb, inferior 3£d to 4§d per lb ; greasy locks, to 4sd per lb. He knew tbat the heavy w.tlr drawals at the recent sale in Melbourne were caused through the halit which the Australian agents have of valuing cor.-ig_mtntß

Mr Matßon aIBO remarked it would save no end of worryanf trouble i_ the growers who had decided to realise in the local market would place full cot fie'erice in their brokers, atd leave oon♦signmfettß \a. their hands, as frequently kale, were mi_ed through prohibitive reBeiv.B beirg placed uren parcels, such referveß being plaerd upon valuations for. #yarded to them, which in the first instance had been pitched on a ba .is fully equivalent to market ra'es ruling in the Old Country and Australia. — " Lyt'_ltou Times,"
