There was unparalleled enthusiasm in connection with St. Patrick's Day, throughout the United Kingdom and the Empire. Many references were made to the Queen and Lord Boberts. Ihe Queen was the recipient of a shamrock grown on the saint's grave, and a harp from the Irish women. The Irish flag was flown at the Mansion House in London and elsewhere. The Lard Mayor of Dublin was subjected to a hostile demonstration by a section of the crowd in the St. Patrick's procession in Dublin, and the windows of his carriage were smashed. The attack was intended as a protest against the Corporation deciding to present the Queen with an address of welcome on the occasion of her visit to Ireland. Thirteen train loads of Boers left Bloemfontein just before the town surrendered. The lurghers desired President Steyn to transfer the keys to Lord Koberts, but he fled under the subterfuge of pretending to visit an outpost. The Boers are in strength at Van Beenan's pass.
