PIGEON BAY NOTES.

(OOHTTUBUTKD.)

The annual after crass-seed excursion took place on Monday last, and was well patronized. The day was perfect, and notwithstanding the smooth sea, a goodly number gave offerings at the shrine of Neptune. After about eight hours spent in the City a start for homo was made, and tho Jane Douglas being on her good behavionr, home waa reached about 8 p.m.: tho one hundred or so excursionists appearing nothing loth to reach the quiet of their own homes.

Tho Quoit Club had a very pleasant afternoon's piny on Thursday, nearly all members of the Olub being present, and quite a number of onlookers. Many games were played, and hard practise was the order of tbe day, the graps-seed interruption 'having thrown tho members out of practise. The Club intend sending a team to compete at tho Easter sports at Akaroa. Mrs Kelly very kindly provided afternoon tea for all and sundry, after which the Captain (Mr McKay) on be alf of the Club, presented Air <V. Brodie, who is leaving for the Old Country in the Gothic, with a vety handsome silver-mounted pipe. Mr Brodie responded, and after Mrs Kelly had be on thanked, the party separated, having had a most enjoyable afternoon.

The Library Conituittee have decided to hold a bazaar on the 24th of May, to pay off a debt of £50 that tho building is saddled with. The affair promises to be a success, promises of live sheep, bags of grass seed, cheese, shfepskins, etc., coming in freely. Tho Commitfo (Messrs Scott 2, Firmston, White, Knudson, T. Innes, and J. Pettigrew) will be happy to receive gifts in kind—poultry, sheep, produce or anything of a saleable nature.

The (">ddtcllow_ celebrate their twentyfirst anniversary by a concert and ballon the 14th April.

Grass seed is moving oat of tbe Bay very quickly, the Jane Douglas taking hundreds of sacks every trip. Theruiing price seems lo bo 3fd for blight and Sd-for dark seed of say to tbe bushel delivered at Lytteltou. Some of those who have real good seed are holding for bigger pi ice.. Theseaßju all through has not been a bad one for tho farmers on this side of tht? range, and there are very few complaininc, and the general hope is that we may never have a worse one.

Anoth *r correspondent write 1 * :—

On Tnursday last Mr Brodi>*, who has lately sold his farm and is about to vi»it the Old Country, was the recipient of a handsome pipe irom his fellow members of the Quoit Club. Members assembled early in the afternoon, and after enjoying several games adjourned to Mr Kelly's house, where a bountiful spread had been provided. After the inner man had been refreshed and strengthened (no easy task after playing quoi s all the afternoon), the Captain of tho Club (Mr G. McKay) rose, and in a humourous speech presented Mr Brodie with a valuable pipe, askjng his acceptance of it as a memento of his association with the Club, and of their goodwill towards him. Mr Brodie, in returning thank':, eai 1 ha was pleased and gratified in receiving such a tangible proof of their good feeling towards him. He had first come to the bay about 25 years ago, and had been about it nearly all tho time. He could now afford to take a holiday, and as Mrs Brodie's health was not good, he had thought a trip to the Old Country would be beneficial to them both ; but he hoped to be back again before long. Again thanking the meeting for the handsome present, Mr Brodie sat down amid rapturous applause. The pipe bore thtfollowing inscription :—" Presented to W. Brodie from th« Pigeon Boy Qaoit Club." Mr Pettigrew proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Kelly ior the trouble she had taken in ptovidiog the banquet. This was carried by acclamation most heartily. I bus ended a very pleasant meeting.
