ArtBOR DAY.

Mr McGreeor, Chairman of the' Borough 'School Committee, introduced by Or; "Harrison, waited on Ihe Council regarding the celebration of Arbor 'Day, which was to'be celebrated on August sth. 'Govern-: •merit had made thedsry a holiday, and be' considered thelesson sought to be inculcated an'excellent one. His colleagues on the School Ccmmitae. with whom 'he had consulted were in favour of taking active steps in the matter and he came before the Council for'the purpose of asking tbem 'for come small momtiry assistanca such as they had given on previous occasion". Tf they, as'the principallocal body, would vote a f-mftll sum of money'for'the purpose of purchasing treee. the School Committee' would dottheir bestf) aid in their success-! fol planting. He m'ght saggest that the •vacancies in the Domain recently Senuded •might'be again planted. There was nlgo the Red House Road, which couTd be made tnnch moie b'enutiful'by pi arming. It was, 'of course, for tbe Council, as Ihe principal local body agected, to decide which: •was 'the bei*t site to solec'. If a small •sum wpre granted, be and his colleagues •on the School Committee would see the ■work ot planting oarefully carried out by the children and assistants*

Cr Chappell adked if'the School Committee wpfe prepared f> vrta £1 for £1 in capo the BorouejhCouncil made a grant.

Mr Mc Gregor said tbe Borough School wt«re not in a position to give pecuniary aiil.

Mr'MoGregorthen wifbdrew.

Bis Worship the Mayor said that previous planting by the children had been a compete failure, as tbe children took no care of the trees aftsr thpy were in, and most •of them were dead. He did not see the •utility of.making any grant. j Cr Penlington aeked if it were intended to fill up the gaps recently made in 'the 'Dwntfin.

His Worship the Mayor said the trees were alrpa.ry 100 thick in the Domain and no planting was needed. A few trees had been thinned oat to make roorm for ■othprs. and where Ihese spaces were "mode maiipps -and other native trees were springing up.

Cr Taylor thought it would be wise to 'make a small grant aa the object was a •roost laudable one, nnd he considered Ibey -should support tbe action of the Govern•ment. He moved that a sum of £2 2s 'be granted for the purchase of tree&.

Cr Munro seconded

Cr Penlington did not know if h were •possible to find a suitable, place to plant the trees. If it could be shown where; fhey might be placed to advantage well, and good, bnt it .was useless <to vote the •money till a site was secured. Cr Chappell eaid that if the County 'Council hj»d given permission, the entrance •of the t9wn above "Mr Mase'field'e property' might have "been planted to advantage as; the spil was good . It was outside the Borough, howevpr, and too to take, •stpps now. The Red House road was al»o> oolside the bound .ry, and in mort plsoeB; unsuitable .for.planting.

Cr Watkins said.*thfl : t be believed plenty •of room could be found in 'tholDomain for •a few specimen trees. The resolution was then put. and lost, only Crs Taylor and Munro voting for it..

Cr Penlington then moved That the. T)omain Committee, via., His Worship the Mayor..and 'Crs Perm and Watkins be' empowered 'to expend a-sum not exceeding. £2 in the purchase of trees to be planted: on Arbor ©ay, providing that in their Ii opinion a wuittfble 'locality for planting can 'be'fourfl.
