The St. Louis Republican Convention by 800 to 106 votes adopted the gold standards the reference- made to the Monroe doetriue, Cuban autonomy, the refusal to allow foreign powers to interfere in Hawaii, and the purchase of the Danish West Indies. The hope that Europeans will eventually withdraw from America, and that in the meantime they will not be permitted to extend their territory in this hemisphere were the pa^- ; sages in this platform that were the most loudly applauded. The silver men protested that they had beea betrayed, and twenty-one retired from the convention, and were hissed as they went. Major.
