The Akaroa Mail. FRIDAY, MAY 29. 1896. THE DAIRY MEETING.

Mr. Bruok, the President ot the Farmprs" Association, has called a meeting of all those interested in dairy farming on the Peninsula. It is to be held at Duvrjuchelle's nt 1 p.m. to-morrow, and we hope that there will be a large and representative attendance.

Our readers will doubtless have read with much interest the meeting of the Banks Peninsula farmers at tho Winter IS ho iv on Friday last, as reported in our columns. Mr Mcliiwan cannot certainly bf3 accused of any lethargy in the chiisp he advocates. He appears to take the warmest interest not only in the factories, but th« dairies also, and we can fairly credit him with using every energy to secure the be*t results possible for all votaries of the groat milk industry.

The result of the efforts of these Government experts has doubtless been to make a vast improvement throughout New Zaalandi Factory after factory has been started, and the neighbouring land made much more valuable as a consequence. There is no better way of settling the people on the land than the eucouragement of dairying, for settlers can live on a smaller area when following that pursuit than in &ny other. We could quote many instances here on the Peninsula of men with tiny farms of a few acres raising large families in comfort and abundance by means of the dairy industry * and the I .nd here is so suitable for cattle at the lower levels that we anticipate a greater development in the years to come.

Our reason for specially alluding to these matterß is to impress on residents the vatt importance of the dairy industry to Peninsula people generally, and urge them not to neglect any menus by which that industry can be advanced. It is only by combined action in these matters that eood can be done, and the n_>s: workable form of combination is the Farmers' Association. Mad it not been for them, this present meeting would not have been called, and it U probable. juatttTS. would have been allowed to no on in the old way _ and it is certainly the doty ol ali who are interested aud' wish

well' to tbe Peninsula to make an effort 1 to be present, at Satnrday'a gathering. Thff.olijset of that gathering is io appoint delegates to a mee'tiri'g of the Dairymen's Association at Dunedin, to consider question of freight, Horns agents, nnd other matters Of importance to tho industry. Tbe Secretary of the Dairy Association told our President that if such delegates were appointed he was sure they would be admitted to take a part in the deliberations of the Association, and j they oould then have an opportunity of pointing oat tlie special needs of the Poninsula. There is no doubt that certain improvements in transit and the treatment of our dairy produce in Lyttelton are much n.pd«-d, as well as reforms of a more general character, and the best way to get .neb matters set ritrht is to join tbe South Island Association, and get its power at our hack to increase tbe strength of our requisition. We could write on th■•■» subject for. hours bnt ppace .Wr not . ennit, and all we want to ur..e is that residents affected .ill come to the meeting on Saturday, so that matters of s'.irh vita) interest t,.> us all m-iy bo folly disou-sed.
