School Committbb
The monthly meeting of this Committee was held in the schoolroom, on Tuesday evening, 2nd August. The members present were—Messrs G< T. Sefton (chairman), D. Foley, A. Meyers, P. Haughie, G. Reynolds, T. Radford, and H. Thomas.
Correspondence was received from the Board re Salaries to Teachers.
It was resolved that the schools be -closed on Arbor Day. Mr Hnghie was appointed to assist the master in the work of distributing trees on Arbor Day to the children attending the Main School, and Mr Foley was requested to perform similar work at the side school, and also superintend the planting of the trees in the side school ground. After passing several accounts for payment, the meeting adjourned. Abb or Day. The celebration of Arbor Day was not forgotten at Little River. The weather was all that could be desired, and much interest was manifested in the proceedings. The site chosen by the Committee for tree planting was St. Andrew's Church and Cemetery Grotrad. A considerable number of trees were procured from Christchurch. Mr W. H. Montgomery rtlso provided some native shrubs, and Mr H. D. Buchanan, a number of young oaks. At one o'clock the chilren assembled at the main school, and marched with their teachers to the planting ground, where they were joined by their parents and others interested in the •cause. Messrs Coop and Montgommery briefly addressed the children on the advantages of planting trees. After the first tree had been planted by the Churchwarden, Mr H. E. Tyson, the children, and indeed all present, were very busy with their spades. The children planted the trees under the supervision of the Arbor Committee. The ioles had been previously dug by many of the residents. In addition to the trees planted in the Church and Ceme tery Grounds, severel hundred trees were distributed to the children attending the main and side schools, to be planted at their own houses. Prizes ' will be giveu next Arbor Day to the children who have most successfully tended their trees during the year. An ornamental card was also presented to each child in commemoration of the first Arbor Day held in Little River.
