The Obristchurch team travelled by ordinary steamboat to Pigeon Bay and from thence to Akaroa by special coach, arriving here at one o'clock end putting up at Wogstaff's Hotel. After lunch an id» jourr.tnent was made to the gronnd, which was found to be in splendid condition, and The thanks of the Football Club are due to the Borough Council for having filled in a number of muddy patches, which otherwise would have been vety disagreeable. Good evidenoe of the popularity of the game in our district was shown by the number of. spectators who. were present, the ladies'especially turning out in full force, which is a very pleasant fact. The Akaroa Captain won the toss, and elected to defend the southern goal. The fallowing were the teams :—Christcburch : Fullback, praddock ; three quarters—Wigley, Mendelssohn and Watt; halves —J, M. Lnurie (Captain), Broaghton and h\, Laurie; forwards — LeCren, Hobbaj Ha'latnore, —Pepprillr -6rledhjll, Jones, Lightband and C. Crone. Penlington, A Narbey. Mr Lewis'acted as referee, with Messrs Styche and Lamb as touch.line umpires. Owing to More not turning up C. Narbey took his place.! The game was started at a quarter past three by Laurie kicking off. The ball was quickly taken into the Red's (Akaroa) twenty-five, where it hovered some J time with little advantage to either> aide until from a long throw out from bounds Mendelssohn got possession of the leather, and dodging the Akaroa backs, scored in good position Laurie took the kick, from whiob a goal resulted, This reverse woke the Bed up, and by a splendid forward rush the ball was taken over the Maroons' line, P. Glynan scoring. Thomson took the kick, but did not improve the score, the angle being a difficult one. From the kick out a good pausing rush of the Maroons took the ball into the Beds' territory, but the letter's forwards, who were playing very determinedly, rushed the ball back down the field and across the line, and & maul in goal between W. Watkins and two Maroon men resulted in favor of the latter. The Maroons were now playing a fast open game, the passing rushes of Men delssohn, Wigley and Brougbton being very effectual and a treat to watch. The Red's forwards were, however, neutralising to a certain extent the play of the opposing hacks, and by a concerted rush took the leather to their opponents twenty-five where Leo endeavoured to pass to Thomson but Brpughton very cleverly intercepted, and up'a gteotj, run by ecorihg. ■near (he.to6oh"lir}e. 1 Mendelesohn essayed the kick, and by a splendid effort converted. The irst spell was concluded with the ball

about midfield,. aud as tho Reds were 8 points behind their opponents Akaroa supporters were viewing tho result with feelings anything but bright. In the second ppell N. Watkine reliev. d Narbey at three-quarter back, a change which was very beneficial. Soon after the ball wus set rolling the Rpds by a strong opposing kick were forced. Thomson kicked off, but owing to en infringement of the rules the ball was brought back again and scrummed off. From the scrum Laurie obtained possession of the leather, and passing to Broughton, the latter, by dodging and feinting the opposing backs, scored for the second time, but the kick was not improved on. Then followed a succession of force downp, five being registered egainst Akaroa. Theee, together with tree kicks awarded to the Maroons, kept the ball in close proximity to the Akaroa goal. From a good p«Bs by Mecdeispobn, Wigley got a clear run end ran to the goal line where Bruce tackled but owing to hie opponent's weight be could not save a score- The kick from an acute angle was not a success. Almost directly after Wigley from another good pass by Men - delesobn a<sain scored but no goal rbsulted. Tiie Reds urged on by their partisans now began to brighten up considerably, and by dashing play and smart following up managed to spoil Craddock's return in the Maroon's twenty.five. Our forwards were now working in earnest, and from a scramble over the line J. Glynan ecored. Bruce took the kick which resulted in a beautiful goal. Things were now looking brighter for the Rede, for their opposing forwards were beginning to show signs of distress, and by a strong rush tho leather WAB again taken over the Maroon's line where a maul in goal between 0. Narbey and Hobbs was won after a keen struggle by Narbey. Bruce essayed the kick, rather a difficult one, but failed to impro*e< Time was now drawi ing to a close ani the Reds were making strenuous efforts to add to their score, which desire was soon an acoompliehed fact, W. Watkins scoring. The kick was a very difficult one, end the score was not increased. The game waa brought to a close soon afterwards, with Cbristcburch five points in the majority, as before stated. The game was won entirely by the Maroons , back?, whose passing and feinting: was far too superior for the Akaroa becks, Craddock, Mendelssohn, Wigley and Brougbton played splendidly amongst the backs, and LeCren and Hobbs were the pick of the forwards. For the Akaroa team Bruce played a good full-back game. Thomson, who was suffering from a ' eevere cold, was considerably off colonr. Tayler and T. Yangioni played with great spirit, but tbe opposing backs were much too strong for them. Amongst the forwards, W. Watkins. Shadbolt, Glynan (2) and Scott played a sterling game. N. Watkins at times showed up well, but did not play with his customary dish. However, the game was played in a good spirit throughout, and it ia to be hoped that tbe fixture will be made an annual one, for it is only in matches of this kind that our play can be improved on.

The ball given (o the Chriatchurch team in tbe evening was a big succesp, about 70 couples turning out. The visitors returned next morning, delighted with the hospitality displayed by the Akaros team during their short stay.
