Christohuroh, Feb 9. Another old identity, in the person of J Mr Geo. Bowron, passed away jesterday afternoon at his residence, Harewood, Richmond. IV deceased gentlemen, who was eighty-five years of age, has been rather infirm of late, and has toen under medical treatment for some time. Nothing unusual was noticed in his manner till about five o'clock yesterday I afternoon, when he appeared to bo tat en seriously ill, and expired shortly after the arrival of Dr Moorhouse. Mr Bowron was one of the few survivors of those who came out in the first four ships, and during his residence of fortyone years in the colonies he has made a large number of friends. In all his transactions he was most successful, as before leaving England he purchased a large amount of land, which has since been cut up, and now forms part of the district suburb of Richmond. The deceased leaves a grown up family, several of which are in business in this city. Leeston, Feb. 9. On Sunday afternoon, between four and five o'clock, Mr Geo. Petrie, son of Mr Daniel. Petrie, of Southbridge, was drowned in the Rakaia. It appears that Petrie with two other young men was bathing in the Rakaia about two miles above Dobbin's lord, when Petrie, who evidently got the cramp, was washed into a hole about fifteen feet deep. His companions went to his assistance, but the current running very strongly, they were unable to rescue him. The body was found about eight o'clock,. aud an inquest is being held to-day.
