We were sorry to see that there were no nominations for the office of Mayor yesterday, as it is a most honorable post and one which every Borough Councillor should hope to attain. We say Borough Councillor because as we have said many times before we believe a training in the Council adds to a mayor's efficiency at the commencement of his office, in addition to which it is only fair that those who have served the burgesses in the council should ascend the municipal throne. Our present mayor has done his duty, and the works which he announced he would carry out if elected, are nearly completed, but his successor will also have an onerous task to perform. He need not think as Alexander did on heaving of Phillip's victories that there are no more worlds to conquer. On the contrary careful finance will be required to meet all liabilities and yet carry on the necessary new works which the public will require. We may not, it is true, be in a position to commence the much needed drainage and water supply works, but we all know the stupidity of running into a thing headlong, without due consideration, and the comparative calm may bo most profitably utilised by a thorough investigation of the best method of constructing these important works.
