ABOLISHMENT. Correspondence was read from the Chairman Port Victoria.Road Board, requesting the co-operation of this Board with a view of abolishing the Akaroa County Council. SAW DUST. A petition, numerously signed by residents of Little Rivet,y' requesting this Board, acting as local' Board of Health, to re-consider itß former decision 'aelativo to preventing mill owners from allowing saw dust to flow into the streams,, by now allowing that saw dust may be sent down in limes of flood. This matter having been postponed fqpm a formpr meeting, pending a report from Professor Bickerton as to the injurious effects, or otherwise, the sawdust* may have in the water for domestic purposes. Mr Coop laid the iollowing report before the Board :— '

" Canterbury College. " Laboratory, Aug. 2, 1884. " Sir, —I do not feol myself qualified to answer your question re sawdust. I can only say that decaj'ing organic matter of any kind is liable to give off rciasmia injurious to health, and it is possible that decaying sawdust may do the same, but I am not in a position to give any opinion. I have referred to somo authorities on Hygiene, but the matter is not referred to, —YoUIS, &C., " BfCICERTON." The analysis of two samples'of water recived from Mr Coop', Xiftle River, August .9, 1884:—----•No. 1 from small, cr^ek.— trace; Cholrino, trace; Sulphuric Acid,,nil; Nitrates and.Kltrites, trace; Atumoflia, Iron, Sulphuric Hydrogen, Magnesia, Phosphates, nil; Blackening discoloration of Perinangatatcs, on ignition, slight. No. 2 from main stream. —Lime, trace; Cholrine, present small amount; Sulphuric Acid, nil; Nitrates and. Nitrites, present small amount; Ammonia, Iron, Sulphuric

Hydrogen, Magnesia, Phosphates, Blackening discoloration of Pertnangatates, nil. The above analysis points out a sample of water quiio suitable for domestic purposes, and not in any way likely to be delerious to health. After long discussion Mr Buchanan proposed that the former decision of the Board —" That no sawdust be permitted into the river" be adhered to. The Chairman entirely concurred and it was carried. Mr Coop urged that the Board had taken a very narrow view of the matter, in view of the petition to numerously signed and the evidence on the subject of polluted water by the learned professor, and besides that their action was liable to damp the timber industry, which for twenty years has been the only one in the district, and he trusted he would be refunded amount paid by him for analysis. The Board declined, as they did not authorise the outlay. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Buchanan applied for permission to effect Borne repairs on the road through the Okute Valley. (Permission granted.) The question of having gateß across public. roads waa discussed, and it was resolved—"That all gates across formed roads be removed forthwith, and that notice to that effect be given to owners." After other business of a routine nature, and passing of accounts, the Board adjourned to December lat.
