In consequence of dissatisfaction with the treatment of the Bey Robinson, late Curate of St John's Church, by the Incumbent, a number of parishioners contemplate establishing a free church, that is to say, an Anglican Church, free of Episcopal control. It has transpired that, at a private meeting of parishioners held last evening, a resolution was past affirming the desirability for establishing a church free from the control of the Bishop, &c. Wellington, March 2. Captain Williams, proprietor of the sunken hulk Eli Whitney, has demanded of the Union Company £3000, compensation for the loss sustained by the Taupo running into the hulk. The Union Company have declined to pay any sum. A return received from the Agent General by last mail shows that the following immigrants were sent to New Zealand from June to December, 1876 :— ToOtago, 1353 statute adults ; Canterbury, 1340 ;Wellington, 736 ; Westland, 227 ; Taranaki, 114 ; Nelson 104 ; Marlborough 96; Auckland, 554; Hawkes Bay, 554, Otago, Canterbury, Wellington, Westland, Taranaki, and Nelson had an aggregate of 173 more, and Auckland, Hawke's Bay, and Marlborough 100 fewer than were ordered. The total ci cess for the Whole colony was 73. A despatch received by last mail from the Agent-General conveys the information that the English postal authorities have decided to forward the San Francisco mails in future by the slow steamers, which take fully two days longer on the transatlantic passage than the Inman steamers, by which the mails latterly have been transmitted to New York. No reason is given for the alteration. Nelson, March 2. Pierce Clerk in the employ of Davis and Co., merchants here, was thrown from his horse and killed, near Collingwood,on Wednesday; his body was brought over in a steamer to-day. Oamaru, March 2. Notwithstanding the late floods, the grain crops in this district are threshing out remarkably well. Threshing is almost completed, and large quantities of grain are coming into town for milling. T. Meek's and Hay and Berr's flour mills are working night and day. On some farms in the district, the wheat averages 60 bushels to the acre. On others, oats go as high on the average yield in the district will be higher than it has been for two years past.

March 3. A gentleman named Charles Hastings Wade lost his life while riding home from Otepopo on Wednesday. On Thursday the horse was discovered in a paddock, and, suspicion being aroused, a search party wes organised, and the body found at the foot of a a precipice, deceased having evidently ridden to the edge, falling off, probably, when the horse started back. The skull was broken and left arm dislocated. Deceased was a distinguished student of Cambridge University. Dunedin, March 2. An inquest was held yesterday on Mr. W.L. Burton, late manager of the Turkish baths. He died in the lock-up, and the jury rerurned a verdict that death resulted form disease of the brain. Hokitika, March 2. On the steamer Charles Edward leaving port a week ago, a sailor named Chambers was missing. A human body has been since washed ashore near Greymouth, which is believed to be his. The Bank this week reported upwards of 6000 ounces gold as the product of this district, including Kumars. Rivekton, March 3. The Western Star rports that a party of three Chinamen in Lake George diggings, got £50 worth of gold for last week's washing up, and the previous week, £9 par man. A boy, three years old, the son of Robert Cupbles, of Groper's bush, was killed by a horse trampling on him while playing in a paddock. At the inquest held yesterday, a verdict of " Accidental Death" was returned.
