OKAIN'S.
[from our own correspondent.] The quarterly meeting of the Okain's Bay Library Committee was held in the library on Saturday, December'3oth. Messrs Coffin (President), Priest, Seftori, Harris, and James were present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.. Also, correspondence re Government grant to library, was read, stating that a grant of £10 was allocated to the credit of the library, and to obtain which immediate application was necesary. The Secretary was instructed to apply immediately, and request that the amount be deposited in the Bank of New Zealand to the credit of the Okain, library. ■ On* New Year's Day the residents of Okain's and surrounding,,bays assembled on the beach at an early hour, to attend, the annual school treat. The weather was all that could be desired, and, but for the unforturiate circumstance,' that the treat clashed. with a cricket match played -at Akaroa,' on the same.date, would have been a great success. Nevertheless, thanks to the energy, displayed by the Misses Hutt, Ware, and Thacker, it passed off very successfully. The usual children's races, together with several round games, played upon the sand, tended to pass ttie ■time'pleasantly; About 5 p.m., the party left the beachj and proceeded to the school house, where a good tea was prepared, and; presided over by the same, ladies. After tea , , an elegantly adorned Christmas tree was illuminated with tapers, which gave it a very pretty effect. = From -it-each,, child received a suitable toy, together with a bag of lollies and cakes," with which they' :.
