DEPARTURIiS. May 2. s Dolphin,' Stewait,— for the* Bay of Island*. Died on Wednesday last, Captain G. A. BENNETT, R. E., &c , &c. The death of this Officer was not in the slightest degree susi eeten, as a like y event, by any, but his medical attendants. Cant. Bennett was only 38 years of age ; but in the Colony, few, if any wt-re more respected. Not being a mamed man, he nevertheless invested a consideiab'e capital in the country, and gave encouragement, to others to follow his exau.p'e. Captain Bennett ever set an example of being a Colonist among us, as we 1 as an Officer of the Government service, and doubtless, lie wi 1 be much missed, by the Auckland people, even if it were only on that account. But his spontaneous kindness as " Pre sicknt of the Mechanic's Institute" and his oiher encouragement by every usefu, purpose, or contrivance for the advancement of the Colony, of course, made his sudden disappearance, a loss to the pace, a Joss which they cannot tut deplore, especially at. the present critical moment, —when it is so necessa-y, and yet so difficult, to provide (o; the" renewal of actual Co'onists
It is almost .needless to add, that His Excellency the Governo and suite attended the ftmeraj, which was performed with military honours, Almost a 1 the inhabi tants of the town were likewise present. Captain Bem-ett's father served in the Royal Engiuee a in Canada, and elsewhere. His mother, su her first husband,, as well as her Son, and is now the wise o, Colonel Brandreth. The Rev. Mr,, Bennett who has himself in the. Oslo d Controversy,—of Tatter days, better known as the " Puseyite .dispute," is a brother of the amiable officer whose loss we deplore. j
