EXCELSIOR v. PATEAROA. GOURLEY THE TOP SCORER. FENWICK AGAIN BOWLS WELL. Although they lacked the services of such cricketers as Thomson, White, Agnew, King and Lees, Excelsior were nevertheless able to field a very strong side against Patearoa, at Alexandra on Labour Day. Excelsior batted first on a good wicket, but the visitors by steady bowling and brilliant fielding, kept the score clown, and although Gourley was in his best form, and Munro and Davanney batted admirably, the innings realised only 111. Their splendid out cricket had placed Patearoa in a strong position, but they were soon on the defensive, some really fine bowling by Fenwick and Aitken disposing of six good batsmen for fourteen runs. It was with the board showing this score that Andrews joined Pearce, and while the position of the game caled for the exercise of some care, these batsmen carried cautious methods to an extreme, adding no more than 31 runs in the next two hours. Eventide had fallen and a draw appeared inevitable when a smart piece of stumping by Gourley at last effected a separation. Tiie closing stages wero invested with a little brightness by Stewart, who brought off some fine drives. When the end came the total had reached 06. Patearoa has several attractive batsmen, and it was unfortunate for the spectators that not one among them got going. Everyone would have been pleased to see John Blakely in form. Dr. A. E. Gladstone and Mr Bert Wright were the umpires. Scores:— Excelsior. Wright, e and b Blakely 4 Kelly, e Greer, bE. McSkimming 6 Gourley, c Stewart, b McAtamney 33 M. Campbell, bP. Paterson, who batted well for 44,. contributing- more than half the score. The early part of Cromwell's innings did not promise well. The first two wickets fell for one run, and 27 runs were still required when the last man went in. Solid batting by Ryan and a stubborn stonewall by the diminutive batsman, C. Johnson,, carried the total to 100 before Ryan was caught, having contributed "53. W. Hotop. with 14 scored in three shots, and A. Bell (15), were the only other players to reach doublefigures. NOTES. A gamo between Clvde and Lowburn was played at Lowburn on Labour Day, Clyde winning by two runs on the first innings. Clyde scored 6.3 (Isbister 23, Caskio 19), and Lowburn replied with 61 (D. Wishart i(), R. McDonald 10). Bowlnig for Lowburn, M. Partridge took six wickets for 2, runs. T.he most successful bowlers for Clyde were Hollander, four for 26, and Caskie, five for if). The rain on Saturday caused the postponement of all fixtures throughout the Vincent County. This was the first time since February 17, 1034, and only the second time since the Club was formed in September, 1931, that no cricket at all lias been played in Alexandra, on a match day. The Vincent Association fixtures for Saturday, November 7, arc as follow: Excelsior A. v. Cromwell at Cromwell. Excelsior B. v. Lowburn at Alexandra. Clyde v. Clyde Colts at Clyde. All games to begin not later than 2 o'clock. Excelsior teams for Saturday have been selected as follow: Excelsior A.: Gourley, Fenwick, King, Bevis, Munro, White, Eekhoff, Marr, Thomson, G. T. Bcilby, and Rogers. Excelsior B.: Davanney, M. Campbell, T. Campbell, Pierce, Agnew, Lees, Aitken, Wright, Kelly, Kinnaird and Johns. The Secret ray of the Otago Cricket Association advises that if it can be arranged, three days' cricket for the Country Associations will be organised in Dunedin during Show Week. A team from Central Otago has been invited. With three sub-Associations operating in Central Otago, only three or four players would be required out of the Vincent Association teams. Gourley has been elected Captain of the A. team, and Davanncy has been appointed to the Captaincy of the B. team. The attention of batsmen is drawn to Law 45 which states that "The umpires shall allow two minutes for each striker to come in." Captains of teams are urged to see that each batsman is ready to go to the wickets immediately on the return of the retiring striker. The opposing side is quite within its rights in claiming the wicket of a. tardy batsman and moreover any unnecessary delay is annoying to the spectators.
