A very welcome rain fell on Monday] night in Alexandra. After the long spell of dry weather the moisture was soon absorbed by the parched lands. The couutry could do with a good week's steady rain. -

-Yesterday afternoon an interesting few minutes was spent at the Alexandra bridge where Messrs G. Hesson and W. Maynard were at work on the new pipe line. Two of the Victaulie joints were put on in less than five minutes. What impressed most about this first elass expansion joint was the easv eoupling, strength, durability and fleiibilitv. There is no doubt about it: the Council has got "the goods" thia j lime.' ' . . _

The Crowning Ceremony of the Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade Queen (Miss Clarice Craig) and the investiture of the Ladies in Waiting (Misses. M. Waters and O. Smith) will take place in the Town Hall on May 8. Arrangements are now well in hand and an energetic committee is determined Ito make this function one which will long remain in the memory of the residents of Alexandra and surrounding districts. There is every likelihood of the Town Hall being far too small to hold those who intend being present.

The following School Committee was elected at the annual meeting of householders at Galloway: Messrs B. Tohili (chairman), A. The publication of the report of the Ex-soldiers' Rehabilitation Commission has been delayed owing to the absence of the Minister of Defence in Samoa. The report itself is a lengthy document of 71 pages, in addition to which there .re numerous tables, all of which have to be considered. As the recommendations of the commission are of great importance and involve, if carried out n their entirety a large increase of expenditure!, the report has been considered by the Pensions Department which has submitted its report to the Minister and these recommendations are now being considered prior to being reported upon »by the- Repatriation Branch of the State Advances Department. As soon as the latter report is received the matter will be considered i by Cabinet, after which the report will be TcleasedV

Air 11. A. White (D.1.0.N.Z.) has installed in his shop in Alexandra a genothalmic refractor, the latest and most up-to-date appartus for estimating the refractive powers of the human eye. This costly appartus dispenses with the use of the unwieldy trial frame in common use in most places in Otago. Already quite a uu'mb.er of patients in Central have availed themselves of the expert optical service in Alexandra, which, by the way, has been a muchfelt want in the district. Mr White is the only qualified optometrist in the district and it' is interesting to know that he was among the earliest in New Zealand to qualify in the profession of optometry. A-peep into the well-equip-ped room showed that it matters not what time of the day or night a pat-1 ient calls as all the work is done under a very powerful electric light. Appointments may now be -booked by those requiring an eye test. I

A clearing sale was held by Donald Beid aud Co., on the property of Mr J. Beattie, at Cambrian last Thursday. Mr Beattie recently disposed of a portion of his land which has been acquired under the group system and there are now eight additional settlers on this property. Buyers were principally local. Considering the state of the market the sale was a most successful one. There were present farmers from all over Central and hundreds of motor cars were parked in the vicinity of the sale. The sheep were as good a line as coiild be seen in any part of Otago being mostly Bomneys in splendid condition. Some of the prices were: One lot of 540 four-tooth ewes at 27s 3d; pen six-tooth ewes 265; 326 four-year-old ewes IGs 9d; 447 four-year-old ewes 15s; pen ewe lambs lis 3d. ' In all about 20 horses, principally draughts in great condition, were sold the top price being £4l for a five-year-old mare in foal. Others realised: gelding (four-year-old) £4l; mare (eight years) £4O; mare (six years) £39; gelding (four years) £39; gelding (nine years) £33; others down to £2O. Hacks realised from £3 to £9 10s.
