Lodge. The Loyal Queen of Maniototo Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.F. held its ' usual fortnightly meeting on June 11 in the A. and P. Hall, Banfurly. N.G. Sister Copeland presided over a fair gathering of sisters. The usual routine business, was transacted after which nominations for the various offices. were received. During the evening visiting officers from the Loyal Maniototo Lodge conducted a degree meeting at which a number of girls received the white, • blue, scarlet and gold degrees. Arrangements for the coming combined Oddfellows' ball were completed. Court News. Some time ago a sensation was caused in the district when it became known that the county clerk (Mr F. Lloyd) had been suspended. The sequel was heard at the last sitting of the Naseby Court over which Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M., presided, Frederic Arthur Lloyd was charged that between October 1, 1924 and March 11, 1929, he received divers sums of money amounting to £419 18s 9d on terms requiring him to account for or pay the same to the Maniototo County Council, and that he fraudulently omitted to account for the money or any part of it, thereby committing theft. Detective Sergeant Nuttall, of Dunedin, conducted the case on behalf of the police. The accused was not represented by counsel. After lengthy evidence had been heard the accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Dunedin for trial. Bail was allowed in accused's own recognisance of £2OO and two sureties of £IOO, conditional upon his reporting weekly to the police. Hockey. Waipiata v. Banfurly. Banfurly—Backs, M'Pherson, M'Cutcheon, Millar (capt), Dowling, Woods, Inder, M'Bride. Forwards, Cromb, J. Mawhinney,, Pringle, Bedding, Mawhinney, Smith, Hewitt, Dougherty. Waipiata—Backs, G. Creighton, Gibson, Fyfe, Bae, Borthwick, Ball, Butherford (capt). Forwards, M'Cracken, Bolt, Palmer, M'Atamney, W. Cr.eighton, Manson, Chapman, Johnston. Banfurly won the toss, and Waipiata kicked off with the sun in their eyes. Shojtly after the game commenced Banfurly were penalised for offside play and Butherford centred to Inder who cleared only temporarily. Waipiata forwards dribbled the ball to the goal line but M'Cutch<»on saved the situation. Play was of a scrambling nature until Pringle broke through and a score looked certain. However, Gibson saved brilliantly. Banfurly pressed but Cromb got offside. M'Pherson took the ball cleanly and ran down the line and centred. From a lineout Banfurly forwards broke away but a knock-on pulled them up. Waipiata countered with a dribbling rush to the Blue and Blacks' twenty-five. Johnston carried on but Millar saved and play returned to Waipiata's territory. After a scramble on the line the ball rebounded from Dowling but Waipiata forced. Butherford secured from a scrum and kicked high; M'Pherson was called upon to save with a nice line kick. Banfurly forwards again broke away but Bae" returned play to halfway. The Blue and Blacks were penalised for offside play and Butherford gained a good 25yds with a line kick. From the lineout Johnston secured and kicked to M'Pherson who was safe.*- Again the Waipiata forwards broke away' from a Hneont and Inder came to the rescue in the nick of time, clearing well. Wai-

piata opened out in a passing rush but were penalised for offside. Play hung round halfway for s6me time. The referee had occasion to warn two players for rough play. M'Bride secured from scrum and passed to Woods, to Inder who dropped the ball. The last named was playing a good defensive game, finding the line with well-judged kicks. A loose scramble took place on the Waipiata's line and a scrum was formed. Woods secured but was bagged. An exchange of kicks in which a lot of offside play by both sides passed unnotified by the refpree gave the advantage to Ranfurly.**lThe play became very ragged. Creighton went down to a forward rush in great style and Waipiata-ttgain forcedrdown. Up to the present Ranfurly had had slightly the better of the game. From the kick-off Woods secured and cut in and passed. The effort came to nothing and Ranfurly pressed again but Waipiata forced down. Play was even for the next few minutes. The next incident of note was when Rutherford secured and cross-kicked, the ball going out almost on Ranfurly's line. From the lineout Rutherford marked but the kick was charged down. From ensuing scrum Rutherford attempted to cut in but was well bagged by Redding who broke away only to to tacked by G. Creighton. Rae ran straight for the line but Inder was there and stopped him. Gibson took a good mark but the referee did not notice it. The ball was" kicked through to M'Pherson who. was playing a very safe game. W. Creighton attempted to get through on his own but Inder marked the short punt. Rutherford missed the ball and a lineout was formed. Rutherford was playing a great defensive game and went down to forward rushes in great style. From a scrum Inder secured and looked dangerous but his pass was not accepted. Dougherty kicked too hard and Creighton forced down. From the kick off M'Pherson kicked to Gibson who gained a good stretch of ground with a nippy run. Waipiata forwards broke through with the ball at their toes but the ball went out of play. Rutherford secured and made a deter-

mined effort to get across but was well grassed and half time was called with no score on either side. On resuming the ball was kicked to G. Creighton who found the line at halfway. Play continued to be of a scrambling nature. An exchange of k..ks left the ball still at halfway. Muwiiiiuiey, Dougherty and Redding showed up in a nice passing rush which earned play aanost to Waipiata's line but the ball was returned well down tiie field to M'Pherson who failed to find the line and Gibson started a pass ing rush. When a try looked certain Rae fumbled and Inder broke into passing and returned play to halfway. Ranfurly forwards dribbeld up field headed by Redding and Pringle. Palmer broke through with the ball at his toe but M'Bride saved. Waipiata forwards headed by Chapman and Palmer again found a weak spot but lost the ball and M'Bride kicked out. Palmer was showing up at this stage. He dribbled the bail to inder; who had to kick out. Palmer gained half the field with a run and Waipiata had their opponents hemmed in on their own line until a force down gave relief. W. Mawhinney looked dangerous in a dribbling rush but Rae was equal to the occasion. The game started to liven up a bit and several good dribbling rushes were witnessed, both sides making an endeavour to score. Rae showed up in a solo effort but the ball went out at Ranfurly's twenty-fiv4. Redding broke through with the ball and gained 35yds. M'Pherson was called upon to save in face of a forward rush headed by Chapman with Johnston in close attendance. Redding again got through followed by Dougherty and a score seemed likely but G. Creighton was again safe. Miliar attempted a pot but the ball went wide. Palmer and Chapman were again conspicuous in a breakaway from, a scrum but Ranfurly forwards w.-re contesting every inch. Waipiata were again called on to force down.Millar secured and 'found the line at the corner flag. From the line out Inder was held up on the line. They made determined efforts to cross the line but the defence was sound. M'Pherson marked and Eutherford .marked in turn. M'Atamney broke away but M'Pherson secured and rail out at the twentyfive. From a serum Borthwiek passed to Kae who almost scored at the corner. Waipiata again pressed but Eutherford V pass went astray and Inder found the line at halfway. Borthwiek kicked well "down the field to M'Pherson but the ball went out. Eae secured and sent play back to halfway. The same player secured from the lineout and kicked to M'Pherson who had plenty of time to find the line. The Blue and Black full-bacX. saved almost immediately afterwards. Waipiata were giving him any amount to do at this stage but he was always safe. Rutherford sent a pass to Borthwiek who had an unsuccessful pot. From a scrum Inder relieved with a good line kick. Again Borthwiek came through but lost the ball when very near the line, the Eanfurly forwards coming round to save the position. Play remained at halfway for a little.
