ALEXANDRA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The.first meeting of the recently appointed committee of the aboye soeiety was held on Thursday night of last week. Mr C. B. Sorrell (president) was in the chair and there were present: Mcsdames Mechaelis, Barker, B. Jppp and Miss Hull; Messrs W. Hewitt, F. Whitelock, E. Kinnaird, H. B. Cowie, W. Simcoe, Taylor-Cannon, C. Theyers and the secretary.

Apologies were received.from a number of the -committee who were unable to be present. Mr Sorrell extended a hearty welcome to the new members of the committee.

The secretary (Mr Mechaelis) then read the minutes of the previous meeting. These were confirmed.

The outward correspondence was approved and the inward'received. The bulk of the correspondence dealt with speeial prizes for the next show. It was moved that donors be thanked for their gifts. Mr C. B. Sorrell brought up the matter of the tickets for the society's show. It was suggested that on last year's 5s ticket the word gentleman be printed. It was jointed out that quite a number of men had bought the 2s 6d ticket. Mr W. Hewitt moved that the os ticket have the word gentleman and that the 2s Cd ticket have ladies printed on them.—Carried..,

The schedule for the next show was then discussed. Mr Sorrell suggested that the sections be distributed among the committee and that each be discussed and a report handed in to the next meeting of the committee. The object of this .was to cut out those items in the old schedules which had not produced entries. Sub-committees were appointed for each section. The following were appointed:—Sections 1 and 2 (pot and cut flowers) : —Mrs Jopp and Mr C. B.; Sorrell. Seetion 3 (fruit) Messrs Kmnaird and Williams. Section 4 (vegetables)— Messrs F. Whitelock and C. Theyers. Section 5 (decorative) —Miss M. Hull and Mrs Kirker. Section 6 (cookery)— Miss V. Marshall and Mrs Mechaelis. Section 7 (fino arts and industrial) —Mrs J. A. O'Kanc, Mrs Cowie and. Mrs Kobertson. Section 8 (juvenile)-—Miss McDonald, and Mr Mochaelis. The secretary will be only too pleased to give any information from past records and help the different sub-comniittees.

The secretary said that some of the previous donors of special prizes from outside district had not forwarded prizes this yrar. Special prizes were needed and the committee were asked to push forward the interests of the society in this channel. Fresh sources were suggested and the secretary was instructed to write these firms asking for donations.

The question of vases for the show came up.for discussion. The secretary gave quotes for the green Langley vases which he had secured while in Dunedin. The committee thought the prices were beyond it at present and it was decided to hold the matter over.

Mr Mechaelis said that two- cups which had been offered to the sjchool were lying idle. He had written to the School Committee regarding them but nothing had been received in reply to his inquiries.—Matter, held over.

A suggestion was . made by Mrs Mechaelis that the " society run tearooms at the back of the hall on Show day. Nothing definite was fixed in the meantime.

The next meeting of the committee will be in a month's time. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded , the meeting.
