THE HERALD WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5, 1929.

A fire at the Waipiata Sanatorium last week caused damage to the extent of £BOO. - At the Christchurch races on Saturday Waitaki Girl, for the fourth time in sneeessioß, won the Stag | George Handicap. There was no sport played in Maniototo last week-end. No news was rceeived from the district this week. Mr Bodkin, ILP, advises that he has been notified by the Minister of Publie Works that an expenditure of £l5O has been authorised on Oven Creek protective works, Millers Flat. Mr Albert J. Iliuton fell from a scaffolding while working on Mr. M'Pheraon's house at Earnseleugh on Tuesday of last week. He broke his leg in two places and is at present an inmate of the Dunstan Hospital. Monday (King's Birthday) was an exceptionally quite day in Alexandra. In the early morning a number of ears passed through, but during the most of the day the streets presented a Sun-day-like appearance. To-morrow will be a busy day at the Alexandra Courthouse. The meeting' of the Licensing Committee will take np some little time. Four applications have been received for licenses in the town of Lawrence. A total of 91 applications will be reviewed. , The weather-has been very threatening during the past week. On Monday afternoon the sky looked for all the world like as if snow was not far away. Frosts have been experienced at nights bnt in Alexandra these have been nothing compared with "those in Fruitlands and other places in Central. The Molyneux River at the present time is at a very low level. Authentic figures show that at no time since the \ erection of the Kawarau dam has the river been so low. -If only the gates were closed claim-holders might be able .to get a little of the '.'dust"; from their claims. Several local resid-, ents have had good prospects on the, riyerbank low, down. If the river continues to fall there should be a regular gold rash. * With regard to the Otago Central Power Board's extension to Matakanui an awkward, position was created by the Loans, Board refusing to allow the Powerßoard to pay the engineering ex- %~ peases "and costs of supervision of the erection of the line and installation out of the loan moneys. This would have necessitated the Matakanui, Omakau and Lauder settlers paying a rate to cover this cost before the power was actually available for them. The matter was brought before the notice of Mr W. A. Bodkin, SLP., who took up the matter with the Loans Board. He haa now received word that the Loans Board have aeeeded to the Power Board's proposals. This will be of great assistance to the Power Board and the settlers who are connected with the extension.
