BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening, 6th March, the Mayor (Mr W. Black) presiding. Present: Crs A. Asbworth, W. Bringans, G. Campbell, S. R. Crofc, W, Hewitt, H. Munro, W. Noble. —Correspondence.—

J. Padgett, secretary Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade, asking permission to be authorised to make a charge for admission to the Recreation Reserve on the occasion of the Fire Brigade Demonstration on Saturday 18th inst.—Request granted. Alexandra Bowling Club, request for rebate on rates, application held over from last meeting.—Decided to grant rebate of general rate £ 1 lis 6d. Ofcago Hospital Board asking support to a protest against the increased fee charged for audit. Council agreed to support the resolution of protest. Napier Borough Council asking the council's support to the following resolution " That the Government be asked to introduce legislation providing that credit balances of local authorities on loan accounts shall be set off by the Banks against debit balances on other accounts as regards payment of interest on the latter accounts." By the present practice the banks charged 7 per cent interest on overdraft on general account and only allowed Zy z to per cent for money on fixed deposit. The resolution requested that the credit balance of the one account should be deducted from the debit balance of the General account. -

Council decided to support the resolution. Department of Health (Dunedin) concerning the need for continued work in the' destruction of rats and other work to safeguard the public health.—Received. A. W. Edwards (Earnscleugh) offering to purchase 6 of the old iron water pipes from the borough pipe line.—Noted. After a lengthy discussion regarding the rights of the council and the possibility of 'other water schemes developing it was decided to lease the portion of the Old Lane's race as applied for by Messrs Thompson, Paget and Robertson with the necessary clauses protecting the council's rights and on terms to be agreed upon. Mr G. H. Hannay was appointed inspector! under the Explosives and Dangerous Goods Act for the borough. On the representation of Cr Hewitt the jeouncil decided to ask the Swimming Club to alter the time-table so as ~to give the public school children exclusive use of the baths from 2.30 to 3.30 on Saturday afternoons, in accordance with the council's intrepretation of the clause in the agreement. —Works Committee Report.— Concrete kerbingVto be put along front of new fence bordering the recreation facing the monu-ment.-—To clean out that parfcjiof the Chatto Creek race within the borough.—The replacing of the Butcher pipe line to be proceeded with as soon as possible. —FinanceDebit balance at bank £92s,"and accounts £l5O passed for payment.
