WELCOME-HOME SOCIAL.

What is likely to be the second last 'Welcome-Home Social' to local returned boys was held in the Alexaudra To ami Hall on Thursday evening last. The Mayor (Mr W. Black) The hall was comfortably filled. The band . played selections outside of the hall while the audience gathered. The programme which contained some new talout, was very successful, several items receiving encores. The following kindly look part :—Mesdamos Turnbnll and Sreelp, Miss Gladstone and Messrs A. E.' Brown and Bell ; recitations, Miss Berry and Mr Swallow. Accompanist, Mrs Turnbnll. Mrs Turnbull from Galloway delighted the audience with her singing of light humourous ditties, oi which she gave six or seven. The mayor extended a welcome to the returned soldiers being honoured — Luice-Corporal A. Turnbull, of Galloway, and , Private L Spencer. Included in the invitation to the welcome homo that evening were also Sergeant C. .1. Spain, Corpora! A. Larson, Private J. Henderson, but fcheso men were unable to be preach'.. To them all he extended a welcome home in the name of the citizens. This would likely be the second last social, as only one local boy remained to return home—Cecil Robertson. . He had not yet left E igland. One j or two local boys had been missed in | these welcome homes for the reason. I that they had arrived back but had ! been only a day or two in the district i and away before the next social could : be hold. Private J; Henderson sent an apology for absence and expressed his groat appreciation of the good work of the Alexandra Women's Patriotic Association. Medals were

presented to- Privates L. H. Spencer, E. Churchill and Bombardier B. A. Thomson. The audience joined in singing for—" Thoy are jolly good fellows." Private Spencer replied on behalf of his comrades, thanking the public for the welcome home and the members of the Women's Patriotic* Association for the many gifts sent to the boys on active service. Supper was provided, thereafter the hall was cleared for dancing. Mr W. Bowler as usual kindly gave his services as doorkeeper. v
