—Engineer's Report.—

Dunstan Biding.—Maintenance work or the lower end of the Cromwell gorge road is about completed, but the men had to be taken off this work to assist in cleaning out the- Clyde water race, which will be completed this week.— Flans, etc., for the new bridge at Galloway were sent for approval immediately after last meeting, but so far I have had no word in conjee _Vf Wfiilfi iSjifiowaj road via lacker IBM has been inspected to ascertain what should be done at the point where the Jtanorburn is encroaching on it. At present the river is not working into the bank but this relief may be only temporary and it is a question of either protecting about two chain* of road or making a slight deviation. There is practically no difference in the cost of the works and I would recommend that the deviation be made as this will ensure a permanent road.

Cr Spain : The engineer estimated that the deviation would possibly cost about £2O to £33. The grader would probably come to the Dunstan Biding in about a week. The Little Valley road to receive the usual annual repairs. Ifatakanni Biding.—So far I have received no reply from the Commissioner of Crown Lands in the matter of Spottis Creek. The gravelling contracts in this riding are Mill unlet and although several contractors have been interviewed nothing definite has been settled.—l have inspected Thompson's Creek crossing on the Matakatmi—lbrybread road and would recommend that some work be done above the fence line to define and straighten the creek *— —channel ind that a motor bridge be built over the creek on the road. At present' the Cre«*k tiWs along the rxd tit a short distance and a fairly long bridge would be required to reach from bank- to bank in flood time. If the creek were straightened the bridge could be considerably reduced in length. It would be advisable for the member for the riding and the engineer to inspect this place and decide on a definite scheme. —The roadmen have been employed in various parts of the riding earryin? on* general maintenance work.

Manuherikis Bidins.—Unc of Smith's teams is at present wyrkini: near Moa Creek The format ion on W. R. Xeviil's road is completed, but portion* •>£ this roed will reqnire gravelling if if is to be satisfactory. A drainage channel has been cut along the fop si'l** 'f the road to carry flood water to the culverts and also to Moa Creek. This team will carry oat several argent works in Foolborn Valley and then retnrn to Dunstan Riding.—Plans for the traffic bridge at Dnndass's have been completed, but I would recommend that repairs to several of the bridges over the Poolhurn be included in this contra?!. —The roadmen haT« been employed in the lower portion of the Valley doing general repair work. Earnseleugh Biding.—Nothing but ordinary maintenance work has been dona in this riding during the past month.
