KOKONGA LETTER.

(Own Correspondent.) Among the many names reported killed in action on October 12th appears that of Durham, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Cathro of this place. Young Cathro received bis early education in Dane Jin, but acting on medical advice removed to the more solubrious climate of Central Otago, under the favourable conditions of which, at the time of bis departure with the loth Beinforcements he was one of the finest physically built men leaving our shores. Gifted with a happy generous disposition he was welcomed in every home aud was socially much sought after, —a keen sportsman —was united with the Kye« bum and Kokonga football teams till their dissolution after the break out of the war. The qualities that attracted bim to all young and old here, served him through his military career to the end, by his letters his regards were more for the officers and comrades in arms than the unfavourable conditions surrounding them. Of the ten comrades, eight have paid the supreme sacrifice, one is missing, aud the other lies in a London Hospital. "They hare given to the world the best they had, The best has come back to them." To the family is extended the sympathy of the district.
