DUNSTAN RIDING ELECTION.

Let all the ends thou aimest at be; thy country's ; Thy, God's, and truth's. Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest. —Mark Twain.

We congratulate Mr Spaiu 011 his re-election as representative for the Punstan Hiding for the .Vincent County. The'contest was expected to be a close one, but the figure proved that the result was never in doubt. - Mr Sullivan was nominated by the Clyde end of the Hiding, where there existed a feeling of discontent with Cr Spairi, owing to alleged neglect of local requirements, the result of Cr Spain's, absence from home. ' A;s , ; :t,o the justness of this charge of .neglect-we are not in a position ;to ■form,. an opinionv; Mr Spain is a,.very)bu.By man, hi? business activities are ous, but that he has the wel£are";of the district at heart no one calf gain-' say. His local enterprise is well known and highly valued,: for ttrlthih/ recent times the district generally for miles around has benefited largely from the -Rabbit. Canning Works with whjclrhe i*Si closely associated. It is just possible that ;m.uch of'Kiff absence from home may bave ; been caused by the anxious

times he along with his co-directors of this company have had to face in • these abnormal times, and the problems-- which,, could only ,be satisfactorily solved by-personal interivews away. With all these things in mind we think Mr Sullivan was 'ill-advised - in opposing Or, Spaiu. Certain it is that Mr Sullivan was practically / 'unknown-at this end of the electorate ; * very many had hot even heard of him before, and he took no steps to make himself' known. This handicap was too much for any candidate to carry, hence the result. Mr Sullivan deserved better. He has a record Of public service which any mau may well be proud of and we are ,not so parodical as to count him out because, he is a recent settler. His public services rendered in Duncdin, are as good as rendered here as far as creditable record goes, and we certainly think that the Vincent County Council electors would do well to secure his 'services at a] fitting opportunity.
