Mining News.

Seven bores have now been put clown by Stewart's Keystone drill on the Earnseleugh Company's claims. The borer achieved a somewhat remarkable record on Monday last, when a large slmil' o\ inches in width and !> inches long w.is brought up by the suction pump through SO feet of six-inch casing. The stone is the largest ever brought up intact by the borer, and Mr Stewart regards it as a wonderful feat. When it is considered that only -Jr-iuch play existed on each side of the stone it may readily be conjectured that the occurrence is a rather extraordinary one, and having seen the stone we are in a position, to testify to the authenticity of the feat. The Cardrona Co.'s dredge, whose office is situate at Alexandra, commenced operations yesterday. The machine is driven by water power and is under the mastership of Mr C. Curno. The improved return of the Olrig Company last week in indeed gratifying to shareholders after a long absence of fair returns. The dredge is now crossing a spot where good returns were formerly obtained, and it is the opinion of the manager that a run of gold passes through the flat at this point. The return was unexpected, as uo word had been received that the dredge was on good gold, and it caused quite a flutter of excitement when the wash-up was reported. The dredgemaster (Mr Johnstone) is deserving of a word of praise for the manner in which his charge is kept going, and the improved return should give shareholders renewed vigor, In all probability the returns will continue high for some time to come whilst the dredge is working on the present run of gold. Owing to the drift being heavy the Manuherikia's return was somewhat effected. The dredge is working into the beach near the bottom of the claim. There is an improvement in the prospects of the Alexandra Eureka, and an increased return may be expected. The Ngapara is reported to be on a rich" ruu of wash, and the returns are said to be very satisfactory. Messrs Stewart and party, at Patearoa, are reported to have declared a dividend recently amounting to £7O per man as a result of six weeks' sluicing. The Undaunted Mining Company, at Matakanui, washed up for the month of September for a return of (J.Sozs lOdwfcs. A return of 22Gozs 14 hvt is reported by the Tinkers Sluicing Company for the months of August and September. A dividend of 6d per share has been declared. A number of shares in this company were recently submitted to public auction by a holder aud realised satisfactory prices.
