Roxburgh Notes.

(0 wn Correspondent. )

A short sitting of the Police Court was held on the 26th, when a young man was convicted and fined £1 for obscene language and 5s for drunkenness. Messrs Burton and Hart were the presiding justices. The annual meeting of householders and subscribers to the library of the athenaeum was held in the hall on Wednesday, the 24th inst. Mr M. M'Mullin (president) occupied the chair, and there was about a dozen householders present. The balance-sheet submitted showed a highly satisfactory state, and it was adopted, several referring to it as most satisfactory, considering the heavy expenditure during the year. The old committee, consisting of Messrs M'Mullin, Jack, H. Waigth (junr.), Griffen, Smith, Cockburn and Haines, was reelected. Mr R. Cockburn was elected president, and Mr Haines re-elected secretary and treasurer. Between fifty and sixty friends of Mr Frank Laloli assembled at Messrs Waigth and Sons' commodious barn on the evening of Monday, the 22nd inst., and gave him and his wife a hearty welcome—the former to his old home, and the latter to her new home. Numerous games, interspersed with music and a few dances, were held during the evening ; the important item of refreshments also receiving attention, During an interval in .the proceedings, the health of Mr and Mrs Laloli was drunk with musical honors, Mr Waigth (senr.), in a short speech, congratulating them on behalf of those present upon their marriage and safe arrival in Roxburgh. Mr Laloli suitably replied. The singing of " Auld Lang Syne" brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. Over 200 people accepted the in* vitation of the members of the Mutual Improvement Society to its social on the evening of the 25th inst. Rev. W. Greenslade (president of the society) occupied the chair, and the social was opened with a glee by the society's choir. Following this were the president's address and secretary's report. The debate " Should bachelors be taxed " excited unusual interest, and the principals Messrs Darling (affirmative), and H. Waigth (negative) were followed by a host of speakers. On the vote being taken the negative was declared the winner. After the debate refreshments were handed round, and the remainder of the evening was occupied with songs and musical selections by members and friends, and a cake walk by some burnt-cork artists. The gathering was a highly successful one, and the capable and intelligent manner in which the debate was handled was proof positive of the advantages and fruits of the society. Mr John Moodie's fine orchard changed hands during the past week, the purchaser being Mr R. E. Bennetts.

Building operations are at present very brisk here, there being no less than four buildings in course of erection.
