Lauder.

(Own Correspondent.)

The weather of late has been fine, and the recent rains have greatly improved the crops, which are in a forward condition. Several of the farmers have some splendid crops of turnips for winter feed for their stock. The timber for the erection of the saleyards is on the ground, and laid out ready for the contractors to erect same. The yards are situated in close proximity to the station, and it is expected that they will be erected in about a month from starting. It is also anticipated to hold the first sale in the new yards about the beginning of March.

The schoolhouse is just about completed, and is a splendid building. In fact it is recognised as one of the finest schools for its size in Central Otago. It will accommodate fully 50 children, and at the present time it is estimated that about 35 children will attend when the school is opened. It is situated at the rear of the hotel on the main road. As yet no teacher has been appointed, but duties will probably be commenced about the beginning of next month.

Both the Lauder and Poolburn Creeks are in excellent condition for angling, and some good baskets have been taken out this season. To anyone wanting good sport this district com pares favorably with any in Central Otago, and anglers and shootists can rely on spending a pleasant time in this locality. The shooling and fishing grounds are within a favorable dis-< tance of Mr Donnelly's hotel, where people will receive every attention and the comforts of a home.

Shearing is in full swing at the Blackstone Hill station, and all the farmers have fiuished. A large quantity of wool has been despatched this season from the district, and good prices are ruling. The new road from Matakanui to Lauder has been completed, and the contractors (Messrs Alexander and Moran) have made a first-class road, and will result in the Matakanui trade coming this way.

This district is suitably adapted for the establishment of a creamery, and the runholders and farmers would do well to favorably consider the advisability of forming a small company in this direction. When the Blackstone Hill run is opened for settlement; competition for these sections will be keen, and when the land is all taken up there will be plenty of scope for a creamery. A movement to this effect should receive support; as it would be for the progress and welfare of the district.
