{Own Correspondent.)

Mr Redmond, our new postmaster, took up his duties on the 15th. Mr Bushell, who has been acting as relieving officer for the past three months, returned to Dunedin next morning.

The road race under the auspices of the Cycling Club took place on the evening of the 20th. The entries were large, and the winner turned up in R. Glendinning, with T. Grover second, and T. Bowden thinl. J. O'Brien (scratch) made fastest time, his time being 22min 3sec.

The anglers who visited Lake Onslow at the beginning of last week returned on Friday, and report indifferent success. The weather was exceptionally fine, too fine for successful angling, and although trout were in abundance, only on one day did they secure good baskets. Ducks and swans they also report as being very plentiful - The annual picnic of the Presbyterian Sunday School was held on the sports ground on Thursday afternoon, 18th inst. The weather, which proved rather threatening in the forenoon, cleared up in the afternoon, and under the control of the superintendent, assisted by the teachers, an enjoyable outing was provided for the children. At the last meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society held on the ISUI, the question of the purchase of a piano and cyclopedia and books on debatable subjects was discussed, and it was unanimously decided to circulate a subscription list among members only. All present subscribed to the list, and no trouble is anticipated in raising the requisite amount.

The Tuapeka County Council at its last meeting voted a subsidy of £x for £1 to the local Fruit-growers and Farmers' Bird Pest Committee on the amount expended by them in purchasing birds eggs. Mining here is in full swing. All the dredges are working steadily and getting fair returns. The Jubilee's return for the past week was 470ZS. The Endeavor party, I hear, is forming into a company.
