Roxburgh Notes.

Mr R. C. Jones, of the firm of Turnbull and Jones, electrical engineers, Dunedin, was in the town during last week making inspections with a view of reporting on the proposed electric lighting scheme for our borough. Four power sites, including the waterworks, were visited, and Mr Jones is submitting to the council a separate report on each. His reports are awaited with a considerable amount of interest, and it is to be hoped the council will be able to carry out its proposal to introduce- electricity. Two of the suggested power sites are within the borough, the other two are a short distance outside, and as the power for generation in many cases seems to be the greatest difficulty, the council should not find it any obstacle in their scheme.

About 6 p.m. on the evening of the 14th our Fire Brigade received its first call, a stack of hay and an outhouse, both the property of Mr T. Redman, being discovered on fire. With commendable promptitude the Brigade turned out, and soon had a strong stream of water on the fire. Finding it impossible to save the stack, attention was turned to the shed, which suffered only slight damages. The stack was valued at The cause of the fire was due to a small boy, whose desire for a fire induced him to apply a match, with rather greater results than he expected. I am pleased to be able to state that Mr T. Beaufort, although progressing very slowly, is now out of danger. A meeting of sympathisers was held on the gth, and it was decided to assist Mr Beaufort in a practical form. The fire brigade, I believe, purpose holding their first concert next month, when an excellent mtisical programme will be tendered. A strong trtee party, under Mr John Bennetts, has been actively practising for some time past, and will introduce at the concert some new and very melodious plantation choruses. A farce, "The Area Belle," is also under rehearsal, and altogether the programme to be presented will be one of the best that has been given here. A large crowd was drawn by our brass band to the recreation ground on Sunday afternoon last, when an excellent programme of sacred music was submitted. The band has 'been making rapid strides during the past twelve months, and to meet the increasing membership new uniforms are being purchased. To assist in this purpose, a social is being held on the 31st.

Business at the court here this sitting was very short. For cycling on the footpath a first offender was fined 5s and costs.
