MINING NEWS.

The rain early in the week caused » rise of about two feet in the Molyneux. The river was steady at the Ajft mark at the Alexandra bridge last evening, but, thug late in the season, it is too much to expect that the river -will again recede to its previous low level. Mr B Eaton has been appointed engineer on the Unity dredge. The Molyneux Falls Dredging Coming has joined the great majority. After battling unsuccessfully for a while, the balance at bank on the wrong side of the ledger gradually assamed such large proportions that the company, last week, decided to hand the concern over to the tender mercies of the liquidator. The return from the Molyneux Hydraulic last week—l7|o&—is the hjet that has been obtained for rme time, and the prospects indicate iii.it the ground is improving. Mr C Monson, who was for some time engineer on the Enterprise No 2 dredge, has been appointed dree" Remaster of the Golden Run dredge, The Alexandra Lead dredge is still idle, awaiting we understand, a rise in the river to enable her to drop lower down the claim. The repairs to the Earnscleugh No 3 dredge have been completed, and dredging was to have been resumed yesterday. The No 1 and No 3 dredges are working steadily. The Ohitago dredge had to stop on Saturday last, owing to an accident to the elevator gear. New gear arrived from Dunedin on Monday, and the dredge will probably be able to resume work to-day. The Sailors Bend dredge had to stop yesterday, owing to the excessive amount of drift set in motion by the recent rise in the river. Should tne river not rise further, the dredge will make a start at midnight on Sunday. The First Chance and Davis Bend dredges stopped at the beginning of the week, being unable to beat the drift. We learn from a contempary that mr«Jderable organising activity is

being manifested by the different branches of the Otago and Gold Miners Union througbo\ . south, land.

The Manuherikia and Moa dredges are working steadily, but they fiud the drift very hea\ 7.
