Tuapeka Licensing District.

The annnal meeting of the committee for the above district was held ,at Roxburgh, last Thursday. PresentMessrs I? J Burgess, S M (chairman), and H Oraig, J Elder, G Jeffery, D M'lntosh, and J Rivers. TRANSFERS. The application of T J Collins for a transfer of the license of the Railway Hotel, Heriot, to J Downey was refused owing to the present applicant not having held the license the specified time.

The following transfers were granted:—l Rae to J A Goldring, Raes Junction Hotel; D M'lntosh (executor) to R M'MiHan, Chinese Empire Hotel, Tuapeka Flat; John Roughan to J Hopkins, Camp Hotel, Lawrence; J Hopkins to H Craig, Thistle Hotel, Evans Flat. KBW OLD HOUSES. The following were granted:—J H Martin, Ormond's Hotel, Roxburgh; J Milne, Bendigo Hotel, Alexandra; T J Grant, Dunstan Hotel, Clyde ; R M'Millan, Chinese Empire Hotel, Tuapeka Flat; J A Goldring, Raes Junction Hotel; T J Collins, Railway Hotel, Heriot; J Hopkins, Camp Hotel, Lawrence; Hugh Craig, Thistle Hotel, Evans Flat.

RENEWALS OF LICENSES. were granted to the present licensees of the following hotels:—Bridge Hotel. Waipori; Waipori Hotel, Waipori; Criterion, Alexandra; Montgomery's, Royal George, Ross Place, Masonic, Railway, and Commercial, Lawrence; Blue Spur Hotel, Blue Spur; Tuapeka Hotel, Tuapeka Flat; Provincial, Evans Flat; Moa Flat, Ettrick; Bridge and Millers Flat hotels, Millers Flat; Bridge Hotel, Beaumont; Commercial, Roxburgh ; Hartley Arms ana" Commercial, Clyde; Speargrass Flat and Cape Broom, Bald Hill Flat.

Caledonian Hotel, Alexandra. —The licensee, F Gorman, in compliance with a previous order of the committee, presented plans for a new house, which the committee considered satisfactory.—An extension of the license was granted, and the application for renewal deferred until next meeting of the committee in order to give the applicant an opportunity to show his good faith by commencing building operations. Albion Hotel, Roxburgh. The police report showed this house and some of the furniture to be out of repair. Mr Haggitt, who appeared for the applicant (J H Waigth) said the necessary repairs had been attended te.—The committee stated that they bad inspected the house that morning, and the police being now satisfied with its condition, the renewal would be granted. Goldfields Hotel, Roxburgh-—Mr Stuart, who appeared for the applicant, E A Bcyd, stated that she had died since the application was lodged.— Messrs Solomon and Gascgoine then applied to have the license granted to A E Gascgoine as executor under the will of the late Mrs Boyd.—The committee granted the application and also a temporary transfer tc Harry Power to carry on the business in the meantime.

The Lawrence police report on several of the hotels there showed defective fire escapes, but efficient means of escape had since been put in, so that that objection was done away with. ACCOMMODATION LICENSES.

D Fraser, Tuapeka Mouth Hotel. — Granted ; fee reduced to £lO. D Adie, Butchers' Gully HotelGranted ; fee reduced to £Z. R Stewart, Island Block Hotel,— Granted on condition that a larger window is put in one of the bedrooms. J Galvin, Shingle Greek Hotel.— Granted; fee reduced to £5. WHOLESALE LICENSES were granted to S P Askin, Lawrence; B Naylor, Clyde; and W Theyers, Alexandra. BOTTLE LICENSES were granted to A M'ELinley, Arthur and F Oudaille, Lawrence. CONDITIONAL LICENSES. It was proposed by Mr Jeffery and seconded by Mr Craig—" That this committee do not approve of and will not grant conditional licenses for any Caledonian or ath'etic sports meetings. They will grant, upon sufficient cause being shown, conditional licenses for any race-meeting held under the control of any recognised jockey club association when tbe programme has been sanctioned by the Metropolitan Club, and for agricultural shows, but they will not grant licenses for meetings of any other kind."—Carried. Proposed by Mr Jeffery and seconded by Mr M'lntosh—" That the fee for a conditional license shall be: For the first day £3, and for a second day £2." —Carried unanimously.

BEFUSAL TO GRANT 11 O'CLOCK EXTENSIONS.

It was unanimously resolved—- " That unless valid reasons in each case are shown to the committee at the annual meeting, no extension beyond ten o'clock will be granted " The committee then heard legal argument; from the gentlemen of the Bar present Messrs Bartholomew, Haggitt, Stuart, Hutton, White, and a representative from Messrs Solomon and Gascoigne—in favor of extensions to 11 o'clock, the convenience of the public being tbe chief argument adduced.

The Police objected to all the extensions, Sergt Bowman 'putting his case in a nutshell when be stated that it was the publicans and not the public who wanted 11 o'clock licenses.

11 o'clock. ALL NIGHT LIGHTS. In- reply to a request for the curtailment of the hours during which a light should be burned outside licensed premises, the Chairman remarked that i considering the number of late travell ers, as stated by counsel in their applications for extensions, he considered, the argument for all-night lights was very strong. The committee had decided that lights must be kept burning all night.—" Mt. Benger Mail."
