UPPER CLUTHA NOTES.

Alluvial mining here does not pre

sent any features worth recording. On the Clutha, in this neighborhood, great activity prevails in getting the * Rising Sun ready for work, and by tfce beginring of the winter dredging will commence, and without much doubt it will pay. The second dredge for the Rise and Shine is also under way, the greater part of the machinery and material being now on the ground The returns from the Rise and Shine claim are, as your readers can see by the published returns, either at, or near, the top of the list, and are iuost consistent; so it may well be reckoned as one of the best claims on

I understand that the New Royal Maori Company, who holds the option over Werner and party's claim on the Clutha, are going to put a" powerful dredge upon the above claim, the boring having revealed the fact of the heavy seam of bottom wash being continuous up the river. So you see that my often-advanced theory regarding the Clutha is in a fair way of being fulfilled. Operations are in progress to get the Voltaic dredge ready to shift up the river, but nothing can be done by way of shifting until the rise of the river next spring.
