Ngauranga 12 March 1851 Friend, McLean, Greetings. Your letter has come to me. What you say is good, and there is no further reason for me to write to you. But there is another matter. Listen, Makoare and I are fighting; it's over his anger towards my people and for that I am angry with him. That's all of that. Our father, Grey, is still staying here. When I heard of the opposition to Governor Grey, I took note of it, and then I brought together the Maori of Ngati Awa, 300-[3]80, three hundred and eighty, to let Governor Grey alone have control of the lands to get them right, and so the tribe would not get into trouble. This was my suggestion to the Maori, and all the elders then agreed, 'That is a good idea of Wi Tako's', and so I will write about it and give it to the press.
